I have about 10 acres of 3 year old cutover I want cleared for pasture. The last 10 acre section I cleared myself with a trackhoe. The rental & fuel was around $3000 then I had much clean up & plowing to get ready for fescue afterwards. I'm thinking a forestry head may be a better option since the ground would basically be ready to plant when they are done. Of course there is a mixture of 3 year old hardwood & pine stumps & regrowth to deal with. Has anyone had any experience hiring this work done or know anyone who does this type work in east central Alabama?

If you don't get the roots up it will grow right back. Also I would think planting seed would be tough on your equipment with all the roots

I doubt a forestry head is going to have much effect on the stumps if there is any size to them.

I would wait till it sprouts out good and in late summer spray a good herbicide and then just root rake it with a dozer.

central ala,
I'm in the process of doing this right now. 30 yo planted pines clearcut. It was on a burn rotation so it wasn't terrible. Also, in the clearcut we had a chipper come in. They chipped everything from tops to limbs to the needles. So we started with as clean of clear cut as you can get. When the site prep was done on the rest of the land we had this done right along with it: sprayed and burned. Then had a forestry disk run over everything. I was NOT impressed with the forestry disc results. Stumps will rot and be able to disc over in about 3 years.

My aunt had a mulched on some of hers and they cut the stump below ground levell. Hers was basicly pasture ready in a year. Ours will probably take 5 years and we will spend $$ as much if not more per acre.

My FIL 40 acres just clear cut and everything chipped for fuel wood and property looks ready to plant now but forester wants to spray and burn come summer, I just hope there will be enough sprouting to allow fire to burn the entire property.

central ala,
I was pleasantly surprised with our burn. I didn't think there was enough fuel. Turned out great.

On 10 acres knowing what I know now would seriously consider a mulcher. I'm talking like a skidder mulcher. I believe we would have come out just as cheap, less work, and faster.

That's what I'm thinking too.
