That's a chance you always run into when buying a used bow. Always look the limbs over very well while rubbing your hands across them. If there are any splinters you should feel them. If they are cracked, it can be very difficult to see. If at all possible, always arrange to look at the bow somewhere so you can shoot it. If it has any limb twisting issues you should be able to tell it. Look closely at the cam(s) and idler wheel (if it's a solo cam) bearings and the spacing between them and the limb. If there is an issue with limb twist or a bad bearing, it should be obvious. If all else fails, arrange to meet the person at an archery shop and have an experienced person inspect the bow for you or carry an experienced buddy with you.
If it's a recurve you are looking at, you would inspect the limbs for cracks the same way. As for limb twisting, it will be obvious when the bow is strung. Limb twist is a lot more common with a recurve than a compound.
