Hello all Im sure this has been addressed before (many times) but I have searched several forums and have come up empty. Im looking for ideas on how to keep the hogs from getting into my deer feeders. I know fencing around the feeders will work, but not really wild about spending a lot of time and money to build fences around every feeder (I have 5) unless this is going to be the only solution.
I have tried several ideas..

1st I raised my pvc gravity feeders up to approximately 40 inches high. This worked for a while, then the hogs would stand on their back legs and hold onto the feeder with their front legs and eat ..

2nd I tried the pvc feeders with the y on the bottom and hung them from a tree with cable. I was told the hogs will try to get up to the feeder and since its hanging, it will swing away and they would not be able to get in them WELL WRONG I have pictures of the hogs standing on their back legs and basically slapping the feeders. In some photos, the feeder is completely vertical (lol) therefore spilling corn each time the hogs slap the heck out of it..

My 3rd and last attempt thus far, I went back to the pvc gravity feeders attached to the tree, raised them 40 inches, and raised the walls of the trough to make it harder for the hogs. Needless to say nothing I have done will work

Does anyone know of a method that might help??? I havent tried building trough type feeders yet, Ive only been experimenting with pvc feeders any ideas or success stories are welcome...
Thanks

fencing around the feeders is the only thing I've seen work....

I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

Buy (cheap) 3 - 5' x 16' cattle panels and 6 - 5' T-posts.

With bolt cutters, split each panel in half lengthwise. This split will be right down the middle of a joint. So, it will leave 3" tines on each side. Now, you have 6 panels with one side 'spiked'.

6 x 16 = 96 & 96/3.14 = 30.5

So, you can build a 30' diameter circle around your feeder. Drive a stake with a 15' sting on it right where you want your feeder. Pull the string tight straight away from stake and place 1st post there. Take tie-wire and attach 1st piece of wire, tines down, to that post. Move to opposite end of wire and repeat with string, placing post at intersection of string and panel. Repeat this until you have formed a complete circle.

Now, you have a 26"-30" high fence in a 30' circle. Depending on how bad the hogs are in your area, you 'may' have to come back and place posts between each existing post. BUT, the flexibility of the wire actually helps prevent the hogs from climbing, or jumping in. The deer should hop in and out with ease, though.

With the current prices at Tractor Supply, you should be able to do this for under $100.

I accept invitations to come catch the hogs with my dogs as payment for my advice!! LOL smile

6 29" hog panels and 12 fence posts. Makes a perfect 30' circular enclosure around the feeder. Kept hogs off one since last July. Approximately $150 to do it but it's better than them eating 10x that in feed or destroying a feeder.

Hire a trapper to trap and kill them.

I've never been told of anything that works except fencing. Or, the obvious...eliminate the pigs.

Good for you for killing them! Good job! I can't imagine why anyone would want these nasty bastages on their property if they have wildlife or agricultural crops.

Based on my experience with a fenced corn plot and the feeder, plus looking at a bunch of busted up traps, it's a lot easier to fence them out than keep them in.

Or, they aren't going to work hard to eat but will fight like hell to live.

Is that even legal? Why would he want to import hogs and wreck the wildlife and habitat on property that hogs haven't destroyed? He will have a problem in no time and will rue the day he brought them in.

I applaud Hogwild and others who catch and kill most every hog they can.

Good luck with your fence. I'd sit there and wait and kill every one that shows up wanting corn.

No it is not legal. Every pig should be killed once caught. It doesn't matter if it was caught with dogs or a trap. Kill them.

Thanks again guys.... bamaeyedoc and Elkhunter.... I do kill every hog I see ( when I can ).... the ones caught and taken to my buddy's club was done the same day, by my buddy and 6 other guys. They were taken like 10 miles from where I hunt. Just wanted them gone and these guys would rather hog hunt than anything else.

Good for you for killing every one of the bastages you see.

My question is if they love to hunt hogs so much, why not let 'em come kill the hogs on your property. You want them gone anyway, right? You're willing to put time and money in preventing them from eating corn for your deer. Why turn these varmints lose on virgin land to wreak havoc? Do they think they are just going to stay on that property? Hell no. They will propagate to an exponential number and expand to the neighbors property where I'm sure they will get a red carpet rolled out for them. In five years, those pigs will be 50x the number they are now and expanded into an area 100x the size they were released on. That has got to be one of the most idiotic things I've ever heard. Well, maybe 2nd to TC shaving his bunghole with his wife's razor.

No. Wait. My bad. Relocating hogs is in fact the stupidest action I've heard in a long, long time. I fail to see a shred of logic in doing so. loco

TC you get the silver medal! grin

Wouldn't you love to have hog-free property adjoining this genius wanting hogs to hunt?

I appreciate the ones that offered help to my hog problem.... As far as the rest, I understand your concern, this property is not in Alabama. However, I'll put myself on restriction and promise to never let it happen again, so the rocks will quit flying.
