Difficulty: Try not to get off track and only add things that you have heard, or your grandparents taught you. We could probably put together a good list.

Rabbit brains are good for baby's gums when they are teething. Just rub them on the gums.

Cob webs are good to stop a bleeding wound.

My Grandma would put Milk on our Sunburns.

I once saw the same Grandma Take a jar of bacon grease an coat a kitten in it. She said the bacon grease got rid of fleas.. and it did.

X2 on the tobacco. I used that trick many of times

read in a book on "ol' timey home remedies" once that sitting naked on a freshly saw pine stump would help treat hemmorhoids.

...it didn't say anything what to do about the sap that got to "other" places. smile

Same book...kill a chicken and split the breast, hold the split meat to a rattlesnake bite to draw out the venom. The meat should turn a greenish color as it draws the venom.

if you wash clothes on new years you will wash a family member away.
if you eat greens on new years you will make alot of money the next year.
playing with my wifes boobs will give her breast cancer.
if her hand itches some company is coming to her house unannounced.

My grandmomma use to say, if you hear a screech owl, somebody you know will die within 3 days. She had a lot of those old sayings. She fully believed them too. More:

If the wind is out of the east for 3 days, it will rain in spite of hell.

Black wooly worms are a sign of a cold winter.

If your nose itches, somebody is coming for a visit.

I'm sure I'll remember more later.

I know this one to be true. Worked at an oil field fabrication company during the summers when I was In highschool, one old guys clothes were noticeably less stained than mine were. He told me when you get oil or grease on your clothes if you don't want to rurn them gojo or fast orange without the pumice rubbed with a stiff brush will cut grease better than anything

A tea bag on a bad tooth will draw the infection out.

Paint a beach ball black and spray with contact cement and hang in the yard and your yellow fly problem will be solved.

Fill a zip-loc bag with water and hang in doorway and it'll keep flys from coming in.

when I worked on an oil field supply boat we would coat our face and arms with Vaseline when we had to pull the deck boards after drill mud spills. The tar and drill mud wouldn't stick and the Vaseline was easier to wash off than either the drill mud or the tar(ospho).

When I was young my mom would give me a spoon of sorghum syrup
mixed with powder sulfur in the spring for chiggers and other bugs.

I saw this with my own eyes. When I was little, we had a red bird in our bay window pecking on it for several days. Momma told us that there would be a death in the family soon. Couple days after the bird left, my step-grandmother died.

Sad to say that we are loosing some of these older sayings and remedies.

It is interesting how many of these have a basis in fact. A few drops of urine in an ear ache will draw out the fluid build up behind the ear drum. Urine is sterile (usually) when it is fresh, but sweet oil drops will do the same thing and don't have the yuck factor. Dog wood bark was used by our native Americans for many things because it contains a natural form of aspirin. I have used tobacco juice on a wasp bite many times, the nicotine is a pain reliever, and is one reason man old folks chewed it, to relieve the pain of a bad tooth, or a mouth full of them. a whole clove will also reduce the pain of a tooth ache. Elderberry wine is good for old horses and old men because it contains a heart drug we use today. Putting a chicken breast on a snake bite is like another remedy, putting a piece of liver on the snake bite. that was the basis of the story the Yearling bu Marguerite Rawlings. The daddy got bitten by a cotton mouth (I think, maybe a cane break rattlesnake) and he killed a doe with a fawn to use the liver to take the poison out of the bite. Daddy survived, the boy got the fawn. Cob webs do stop bleeding, sugar will keep a cut from getting infected. A past of baking soda let to dry on poison ivy will draw out the poison and dry it up. I have not heard of adding the coffee, but the caffeine might be a vaso-restricter.
There are a lot of old remedies out there that work, there are a lot that don't, and a lot that hurt more than cure. I tend to trust my Dr. rather that the old granny woman.

My mother says that her grand parents would put chicken litter on her lips for chapped lips. Think about it, you would definitely stop licking your lips!

Here are some of the one's I can remember.
-urine will cure an ear ache/stopped up ear
-tobacco will cure pain from a bee sting
-burnt (used) motor oil rubbed on a dog with the mange will cure it
-put kerosene on a cut to promote healing and stop infection
-put salt directly on an ulcer
-death's come in threes

I could probably think of a lot more if I put my mind to it.

A tea bag on a cut will stop the bleeding. I think the tannin in the tea acts as a coagulant.

Honey bee stings help with arthritis pain. I know a guy who swears by it.
I have seen my grandpa get some bad cuts and he would use turpentine and sugar. He never went to the doctor. My grandma had paw pull one of her teeth with a pair of pliers. She was a tough woman.

Sorry to hear about your step-grandmom . Its funny you mention about the bird pecking on the window...about 3 years ago we had this finch/oriole/ something or other that would fly right up to our bedroom window and because he would see his reflection of himself, he would try to attack what he thought was another bird,...I guess it was mating season for them because it was mid springtime. Well this got really really old after about 5 days of this crap, especially before you would wake up in the morning!! He would actually be loud enough to get me up outta bed. Sooooo,.. I reckon the ol saying is somewhat right cause after 5 days of that chit I got my Benjamin 22 pump pellet rifle out and that very same bird did in fact die that same day!! lol

Heard the hornets nest last year for the first time.

In order to determine the sex of an unborn baby. Simply tie a ring on a string and apparently whether it spins righty or lefty determines if its a boy or girl

I've had arthritis since I was about 22, and bee stings DO help, if close to or on the affected joint.

LOL I probably killed 2 dozen red birds, mockingbirds, and blue jays over the years when I lived @ my parents' house for pecking on the window. They were like frigging drug dealers...kill one and there were two waiting to take his place!

Turpentine and sugar for a worm remedy also. I've never tried this one but my wife said that her Grandma used to worm all of the grandkids occasionally, just in case.

I stayed in the woods for a spring with a old man "Buford Stitcher" learning about herbs, their was way to much to keep up with. But a few I remember:

Yellow Root tea cures all ailments
Chew on green pine needles to stop coughing
smoke rabbit tobacco to clear sinuses
make tea out of saw briar for testosterone
Chew sasafrass bark for sore tooth
BoarHog Root is natural Viagra

I should never get arthritis then. I've been stung 6 times by honeybees in the past 2 weeks.

If a child has asthma plant a sourwood sappling. When the grows to be taller than the child, the child won't have asthma anymore.

My greatgrandmother used to cook polk salad every spring for everyone's "spring cleaning". Used the tobacco on the wasp stings frequently. My grandmother swears that when she had a blood clot in her leg that my greatgrandmother rounded up some red elm bark, boiled it and wrapped her legs with the juice and in 3 days it was gone.

When my mom (she's 90 now - that's unimportant but it shows how old this remedy is) was a little girl she got a wart on her index finger. The family maid, who had grandparents who were slaves (this remedy is supposed to come from slave folklore), mixed up a salve of a few kitchen ingredients and bacon grease. She covered the wart in the salve and then wrapped the hair from a horse's tail around it several times and tied it off. That was wrapped in a linen bandage and left untouched for 5 days. The wart fell off and never grew back.

Calf dehorning paste will get rid of one in 10 minutes if you're a big enough boy to stand the pain for the last 7 minutes

I dont know what or how he did it but when I was young I had a distant cousin that could talk warts off. I was about 11 and I had warts on my feet and one on my hand. The ones on my feet (probably 15 or so in a couple of patches) hurt when playing sports. I didn't think it was possible to remove them because we had tried several medications. He moved his hands over them while mumbling something in a very low voice. Within a week maybe two they were gone. Darndest thing I have seen happen to this day.

I had an Aunt that did basically the same thing. I had them all over both my hands and they were gone by the next week.

Chew on a Southern Spined Ash tree branch and it will stop a tooth ache. I have always heard it referred to as Indian Toothache trees.

Another old saying we always used to go by was the signs. We always castrated hogs and cattle when the sign was right. Never have any surgery when the sign isn't right or you can bleed to death.

The ring on a string deal over your wrist works...my two girls were predicted as well as us doing it to several other couples we know. They all came out right.

My grandmother would eat Vaseline for stomach ulcers and diverticulitis. I was sitting there one day as a teenager and she had a Sams size jar of Vaseline sitting on the counter. I made a comment on it and she said "Oh, that reminds me" and took a spoon and got a big scoop and swallowed it. I wish I had the look on my face when I saw that one for the first time.

My grandad would use horse liniment on his knees when they hurt.

Tomato juice bath for poison Ivy. Clorox bath for chiggers.

My mom and grandmother both put a fingerful of Vick's Salve in their mouth way back between their cheek and gums at bedtime to clear their sinuses while they slept.
