if so .. whats the benefit or downfalls to using them instead of regular plates?

Ive been told they are cheaper than regular tags..Been told that they exempt you from needing CDL.

Ive called 2 DMV offices and both gave different answers. One said they were cheaper, other said $7 more than standard tag. Neither of the DMV ladies I talked to knew what the differences were really , one to the other.

Truck I was considering this for will be used for almost nothing other than as a spare tow rig for a 24' gooseneck back and forth between leases 4 or 5 times a year.

Any input ?

I was told that the only benefit to a farm tag now is that they allow you to run overweight. They USED to be cheaper because you were restricted to a certain number of miles around the farm. and beyond that distance you would get ticketed. The Blount County DMV told me it would be more to get a Farm Tag than a regular tag for my truck. That is all I know about it and don't swear for the accuracy. Did not make much sense to me at the time.

I have farmed my whole life, been from Florida to Missouri to Ohio back to Alabama. I ain't ever ran a Farm Tag. NOW I am running an Ag Tag on my wife's car. If you are using the equipment for your personal use, then I wouldn't worry about no weight limit.

I know they used to have a mileage limitation from the farm you could drive. Don't know if that has changed in the last couple of years. I had one a few years ago and it was somewhere around 30 dollars. Was about the same as my trailer tag.

I just googled Alabama Ag Tag. It looked like the first pic with the green hills and the tractor. If these guys had something planted, it wasnt soybeans. wink

I don't think the cops even know the rules when it comes to farm tags. but another way to get around a tag on a vehicle you rarely use is to sell the truck to yourself or your wife when you need to drive it. That way the bill of sale says you got 10 more days to register it.

I have one on my truck and I know of no added benefits that you get by having one.

I have a Farm and I just wanted a farm tag.

Lived on a farm nearly all my life. Never had one.

I'd like to have one for my old Chevy 3/4 ton, I'm still confused, do they cost any more than a regular one?

That doesn't work. Try it and see how far that gets you with a cop or judge.

By the way, the law says you have 10 days to register it, it doesn't say you can drive it during those 10 days. There are some municipalities that will write you tickets for it even if you just drove off the lot. Irondale is one of them. Those tickets have held up in court.

I lived on a farm for a long time and never owned one. We have tractors, trailers, etc. I did see something a while back about you could only drive x numbers of miles from the farm with a farm tag or your ticketed. I never checked into it to see if it was true. I just buy tags and roll.

You have 20 days to register the vehicle and can operate it during that time. As long as you have the ownership documents with you.

In accordance with the opinion of the Attorney General issued to the Honorable Larry Prince, Tax Assessor, Franklin County, under date of June 2, 1993, during the 20-day period a newly acquired vehicle may be operated without a current and valid Alabama license plate being displayed on the vehicle, if the owner has not secured a new registration for the vehicle.

Within the first 20 calendar days of purchase or acquisition of a self-propelled motor vehicle, prior to receiving a copy of a registration receipt, there shall be retained within the vehicle being operated a legible copy of the legal bill of sale if the motor vehicle is not subject to the provisions of the Alabama Uniform Certificate of Title and Antitheft Act (Section 32-8-1, et seq.), or the owner's permit copy of the application for certificate of title for a 1975 and subsequent year model vehicle, or an official copy of a current and valid Alabama temporary registration receipt as authorized under Section 32-6-210 to Section 32-6-219, inclusive, assigned to the vehicle being operated.

I have run a farm tag every since I bought my 2000 F-250. The tag office wanted me to sign an affidavit that stated that I would not tow anything with a combined GVWR of over 6750 lbs (or some were around there). I told her there is no way I could sign that because the GVWR on the truck alone exceeds that. She said then it would be a farm or a commercial tag if I tow anything or I could be ticketed. Been running one since.
Farm tags renew in November. It allows you to tow up to 30,000 lbs. within the state and within 200 miles of your farm. They are valid as a tag everywhere, just the towing weight allowance is within 200 miles. They are significantly cheaper than a commercial tag to haul the same amount of weight but definitely more than a regular tag.
