What's your view? Had trouble with either? I know they both kill a deer obviously, but does either affect arrow flight more than the other or something?

Shot placement is everything. But I prefer mechanical (rage,t3) because in the case of a bad shot they sure do help.

Fixed myself. Seen a lot of shots with expandable that will hit a bone on the other side and either the arrow will back out or break off which leaves no blood trail if you are shooting down. But every one has there preference. Same can be done with fixed blades but not as often.

And shot placement is always key. But I like the extra security of the fixed blades bulling its way all the way thru.

I don't have a problem with either, but I'll probably shoot Slick Tricks as long as they make them.

I shoot Thunderhead 100s. They fly just like my field points out to 60 yards. They may be good at farther distances, but I haven't tried it yet.

Ha, I am glad someone picked up on it. In all honesty I haven't shot enough deer with a bow to have a valid opinion. I have always used Muzzy's just because that's what the guy that got me shooting bows used.

You want a killing machine that will fly, like a field point (yep, I said it) at long ranges, get some Ramcats.

I'm a Muzzy guy. I swapped over to Splitfires one time... shot at a doe quartering away (hit around last rib) and watched the arrow turn. Never found her.

Threw those SOBs away and went back to my Muzzys. Haven't (and probably won't) change again.

Im new to bow hunting, last bow season was my first bow season. Hunted plenty of years with a rifle. Just hadnt got the chance to stick one with an arrow. My climbing tree days were over this past season as I had a leg injury, and I was limited to shooting houses which I dont believe is the true hunting experience. Thanks for the info, just trying to make sure when I do get the chance to sling the arrow, it'll pay off with meat in the freezer! thumbup

Muzzy man here. I shot one through the face of a 135 pig at 8 yards and it came out behind the shoulder intact. Enough said.

"Expendable" is an accurate description in my opinion. Innerloc 100 gr. 3 blade, for me.

2 blade rage, i have some ive killed 3 or 4 deer with. usually i sharpen the blades and wash the blood off and stick em back in the quiver, if i shoot one through the shoulder or spine or hit a rock on the exit i will replace the blades.

Typically mechanicals will fly better. Fixed heads have more surface area hitting the air which can cause them to plan off line. That's why you will hear a lot about broadhead tuning. Most fixed will be tougher but mechanicals give a bigger cut. So its just preference. I like playing around with both kinds. I had ramcats and rage hypodermic in my quiver this past year.

haleyville al,
muzzy tried some mechanicals shot two deer never found either one. first was a quartering shot ran off with the arrow in her. second was a pass through found arrow in field and never opened. found very little blood on both. they hit the trash and I went back to muzzy. haven't looked back.

Slick Tricks and the Muzzy 3 blade for me. I tried mechanical and did not always get a pass through. I never have had a muzzy not pass through. I even had a Muzzy remove an opposite shoulder on a doe I shot quartering away.

I shot a doe this year quartering away with the rage extreme and I aimed for the off side shoulder to see how well it penetrated. Complete pass through and buried up 6" in the ground. She went maybe 10yds and was down.

G5 Striker or Slick Trick for me. I'm equally confident with either. Those things fly AWESOME out of a well tuned bow, penetrate great, and will mess up a deer's world. I've got the worst deer luck on the planet (other than Vernon Tull) and I just can't risk something going wrong with a mechanical.

Have shot Muzzy and Slick Trick for several years. Slick Tricks are accurate and lethal. Shot my first deer with an expandable this fall. I used a 100 grain Rage Extreme just for the heck of it. I have seen my buddy take several deer with the Rage heads and I was just curious. I shot a doe in Illinois quartering away at 35 yards with the Rage. She made it a total of 40 yards before doing a pile driver into a small drainage in the field. I must say I was impressed with the Rage. The one I used had the shock collar instead of the o-ring for blade retention. Might have to keep a couple in my quiver from now on!

I know there are a lot of good heads these days, both fixed and expandable. The two that have my interest right now are the NAP spitfire maxx and the QAD Exodus.

A Rage made the nastiest bloodtrail I ever caused. I have killed several with them. AND I have had 1 or 2 that had poor penetration and lost deer. I KNOW when a Slick Trick hits its target it is going to cut. I shot thunderheads and muzzy with good results, but Slick Trick 125 magnums are the best I have shot.
