Have you killed more deer on green fields in the AM or PM? Ive heard people kill more in the PM. If this is your experience why do you think more are killed in the Pm? Thanks

Because they feed more there in the daylight hours of the PM would be just a wild guess???

I've never killed a deer on a field in the morning, but neither have I ever hunted one in the morning. True story.

But seriously, I reckon for me it's just the stereotype of deer behavior. Hunt them in the woods in the morning, on the fields in the evening.

Guess it depends on when they get hungry....
Generally catch them leaving fields in the AM.... And catch them headed towards the fields in the PM... When I hunt a field....its in the PM....

of all the five and older bucks I've killed only two of them involved a greenfield, both in the evening. A seven year old followed a hot doe into a very secluded greenfield I was watching. A five year old was standing 15 yards out of a greenfield in the entrance road when I snuck up to the field right at dark.

I've hunted greenfields a lot, mostly culling does and those are the only two five year olds I've ever seen at a greenfield, or in one. LOTS of younger bucks and does.

I don't hunt greenfields in the am, seen very few deer using them in the areas I have hunted in the am.

I agree with Fred. We've only killed 1 mature 5 y/o standing looking into a green field, in the pm. Most are 2.5 y/o bucks, we rarely even see 3.5 y/o bucks in green fields. I've seen some 2.5 y/o bucks in green fields in the am, crusing thru, not feeding, although most of the time i'm not hunting where i can monitor the fields in the am.

If the ground is going to be frozen in the AM there's no chance that I'm hunting a green field in the AM. I just try and focus on the pressure... Low pressure I'm hunting in the woods regardless of AM or PM. High pressure and the deer tend to want to feed more so a food source like a green field can be the ticket. As far as seeing mature bucks in green fields, I think if no shots have been fired in a field and there's been no pressure or disturbance to a field, it's a great place to see mature bucks, I've seen quite a few 4 yr old plus bucks killed in green fields when kept quiet... Unfortunately my club members don't care for this and just shoot does left and right in our food plots so we don't have much success as far as bucks go

My theory based on the places I've hunted:

In the morning you are most likely to bump them or any other deer off the field as you get there. The most likely time they will be there feeding is before shooting light as they've probably been feeding there all night. During daylight hours, they usually aren't feeding as most of them just fed all through the night. Your best hope of catching one in the morning is parking a long ways off and slipping in, hoping one is standing on it as shooting light arrives.

In the evening, you are already in your stand when it starts getting time for them to arrive. They have been mostly bedded all day, so food could very well be on their mind. Early season they may be more comfortable and arrive earlier, but as the season progresses they seem to get later and later before turning fully nocturnal. Sightings in the evening of bucks really depends on other food sources and the pressure they've been under.

During the rut, you are probably almost as likely to see them in the morning on a plot as the evening. Sometimes they will feed, but mostly they will just be cruising.

My favorite time to hunt fields are the opening week or two of rifle season because they are still in their summer routine and haven't been pressured yet. My other favorite time is the last week in Dec into the first week of January when bucks are spending more time packing in calories getting ready for the rut, it seems. These times are when I've had the most success and when trail cam pics have been most prevalent during the daytime on plots.

I think one thing you can do with a greefield in the morning depending on the location, is look at it more like a powerline. if you have a 200 yard long greenfield located between and or arround little pines, cutover etc. I have seem them just cross it alot of times. Something to think about, just creates an opening for you to see and shoot if they are moving through.

I agree with this especially the part about pushing them off the fields in early morning.

When i'm talking green fields, i'm talking about round or square type fields. Planted roads, or power lines are a whole different story. A mature buck crossing one of these is different, afterall, he's probably crossing these, not to eat, but to travel from one location to another. As far as pressure goes, we don't shoot does on food plots, and try and only shoot 3.5 y/o or older bucks, and we still rarely see them on the plots. Occasinally, but rarely. Once a buck feels pressure, it doesn't matter if its on the plot or not, he's careful where he shows his face during daylight hours. Also the closer the plot is to thick bedding makes it more likely to see daylight pm action.

I enjoy watching the sun rise in the woods and hoping there will be a few turkey near, and hunt the woods in the pm to catch the squirrels playing near by. After dark is went I hunt the plots..... Always more there at that time of day whistle

I've killed them in fields morning and afternoon. Doesn't matter.

We averaged roughly 2 deer/hunt on morning greenfield hunts. We averaged 12 deer/hunt in the evenings. Play the numbers game. I'd rather gouge my eyes out than sit on a greenfield in the morning.
