Steelman your right but I have a bad taste left in my mouth. My brother still hunts with the same one I used and kills deer. I just don't like them.

25-06 would be my choice.

That's good info to know! Maybe I should tell that to the truck load of deer I've killed with my 243 because they didn't getting the memo.

So if the the 5-6 you lost with your magnums were dead within 50yds why did you not find them?

I call bull on that. Seen lots of guys make bad shots shooting magnums with no deer found. It certainly wasn't within 50 yards. Buy what makes you happy and believe what gives you confidence but that doesn't make it so.

Sorry if I sounded confrontational. I just don't understand why people insist on punishing women and children because they think it takes a magnum to kill. Shot placement and good bullets is what kills. If she doesn't like the recoil , it will be a factor in accuracy.

Do not go the muzzle brake route. If she ever shoots the gun without protection, not only will it damage her hearing, it will create a flinch that will be hard to break.

Buy her a gun of her own.

I just happen to have a Steyr SBS Pro-hunter Mountain Rifle chambered in the girl friendly 7mm-08. It has a 3-11x50 Pentax scope on it and I'll through in some ammo. $900

As far as magnums go, from a guides stand point....I HATE them.

7mm Mag and .300 Win Mag shooters are some of the worst. (not aiming this at you or anyone) Even when I am guiding for grizzly and brown bear, it never fails that the "deer hunter/Magnum hit them anywhere philosophy" gets me in to shoot outs with critters that can bite.

I have a boss 30-06, I shot a 7pt several years ago with it from a shooting house (without ear protection). As soon as I pulled the trigger my ears started ringing (painfully loud) and continued to do so for 2 + days. I haven't been hunting with that gun since. And yes I understand it doesn't take very long to slide on some ear plugs, but a lot of times I only get 5-10 seconds to shoot a mature buck, and those few seconds putting on hearing protection could be the difference in a taxidermy bill or a bad mood.

Bowhunter84 I never said it wouldn't kill a deer now did I? So before you chompin at the bit go back and read up my post. And I can tell you if you try to take a 243 to most any outfitter up north where the deer can get over 300lbs they will not allow you hunt. Oh and for the ones I lost I was young and didn't know much on tracking but since I have yet to lose a deer.
And R_H_Clark I'm sure you know guys that lost them with magnums as well as I do. Guess I've been pretty lucky since I've lost my last one about 6 years ago. And I don't insist on punishing nobody. She is the one that wants to hunt with rifle and ain't scared a bit of it. Just wants some of the recoil reduced. She'll shoot it 7-8 times before quitting any day. And I didn't take the comment as confrontational. I been on here long enough now to know how most of you guys respond and it don't bother me what so ever. And I'm sorry if I sound the same way. I was just wanting some simple feedback and it turned into a bullcrap from the couple of know it alls that's it.

Get a limb saver recoil pad put on your gun. Had one put on my 30-06. Could shoot all day and never feel it worth the money in my opinion.

Steelman I hunt with a Savage 7mag with a 3-9x50 Vx3 Leopold and have a weatherby 300 ultra mag with a 3-9x50 Nikon monarch on it.
Big game hunter that's your opinion and your entitled to it just like I am mine on a 243. But I did book a hunt at timber ghost in Iowa and they plainly tell you nothing smaller than a 270. And yea I'm sure it gets a bit sketchy with those big ole critters up north at times.

I have a buddy that shoots a 7 mag with a boss on the end. If she hits the deer she better hopes it falls, cause she ain't going to hear it crash in the woods. No way that I would do it. Find someone who will let you borrow a rifle.

I didn't realize Iowa allowed centerfire rifles. I thought they only had archery, mz, and shotgun seasons. Is this a preserve hunt you're going on?

Timber Ghost is a preserve and it is legal to hunt inside a preserve in all states that have preserves with any sort of firearm regardless of the state laws. (to my knowledge)

Fr8shaker I couldn't agree more. I suggested we buy her a rifle and she don't want one. Her words were why buy one when we got two? I explained that sound would be an issue and she said she'll just wear ear plugs. So she is aware of the consequences and insist on using anyway.
Hunterbuck yea its a paid preserve hunt.

I realize that. That's why I asked if it was a preserve hunt. A quick look at their website shows that they also offer free range hunts, which are bow and mz only, per state law.

Sorry if I directed it off topic. I would try some managed recoil round and possibly some of these before a brake.

I have said this many many times on here but I'll say it again.I mostly hunt with my Tikka t3 lite30-06 but I do hunt with my 7600 rem.243.especially when my shoulder is dealing me fits. Two weeks ago I dropped two mature does in their tracks not ten yards apart.I started shooting the Winchester bonded hollow points in that .243 when they came out with them.Recoil is minimal and IMHO has the same affects on the animal that magnum rounds do.I wish I had some pics of the devastation that comes from that round. It is definately an eye opener if you doubt the .243.I used to be very devout about shot placement behind the shoulder with a .243 but with that round I shoot them like I do with my .06 straight in the shoulder blade and it drops em in their tracks.$.02
