I kinda like fighting the bugs and snakes in October. Hell miss. starts their bow season oct 1st. or use to. I'd rather split the state than split the season. By Nov. 1st deer have come out of their summer pattern. I've always enjoyed the transition from warmer weather bowhunting to the cooler season.

IMO, They should do away with October and add a few weeks in Feb. I agree. ME 3!

I think the commissioner should follow current law: Section 9-2-7
(b) The commissioner is empowered to do all of the following:
(7) To close the season of any species of game in any county or area when, upon a survey by the department, it is found necessary to the conservation and perpetuation of such species and to reopen such closed season when it is deemed advisable.

Hogwild, Tradition is the ONLY reason for the current setup. No legal, scientific or any other type of reason for it. I agree. Don't be caught without your "harvest record" though. Rules is rules.

[quote=49er]No, the season is not too long.
If you get tired of hunting, don't go. It's not mandatory.
If you like the way TN does it better, go there. [/quote
Most states have modified their deer seasons in response to population changes and hunter satisfaction surveys (rut timing, see Florida and antler restrictions). I'm not sure why you are against every single possible modification of deer season. If it were up to you we'd have the same season for the next several centuries. Hunting and hunters have changed, deer populations have changed, and science has changed. I'm all for improvements and Alabama may be THE ONLY state i know of where deer hunters in some areas can't hunt the rut. I'd gladly give up a week or two in December to push the season into the first week or two of Feb. I think it's a great idea and i believe we will see that happen within the next five years. Hunters in Florida and other states have asked for changes and have received them. We are the stakeholders of the resource and we should have a voice in how our resources are managed.

Love the season length as it is.
If you think it's too long, I agree with 49er. Stay home. No one forces you to go.

The season would be considered too long for me if WMA gun seasons weren't controlled and were open week after week like private land. At least with private land, many can control the population by deciding to pull or not pull the trigger.
As a kid where I grew up, my gun season was two weeks long. School shut down the 1st week in conjunction with Thanksgiving. We have it good here. Be thankful.

Dan, during that two-week period were there restrictions on the size of bucks or was it a brown, down scenario and just about everything was killed?

Dan, during that two-week period were there restrictions on the size of bucks or was it a brown, down scenario and just about everything was killed? Clem, In West Va, back then in the <70-80's, most still had the mentality of a "mans" deer had to be a buck (but there wasn't a doe season for gun, only bow). And since the gun season was 2 weeks long AND the bag limit back then was one buck, it equaled "brown it's down". Minimum antler restriction was 1" (maybe 3"?)above the hairline. Since then, I think you can shoot 2 bucks and doe seasons and bag limits have become available and more liberal.

Actually divided into three zones: Zones 1 and 2: Oct 1st-Jan 31st (Weapons types and Style Vary) Zone 3 (Coastal Region) Oct 15th- Feb 15th (Variable Weapons/Styles) The facts, nothing but the Facts!!!

Two zones:
(1) Those who want to hunt all season if it goes into February stand over here.
(2) Those who would hate to hunt all season if it went into February stand over here.
Zone(1)go hunting. Zone(2)go home and find something else to do. No matter what you say 49er I believe we will see a change in the seasons in the next five years to reflect the different rut dates in the state. It's happened in virtually every state in the south. Alabama is one of the last holdouts. If enough hunters (I will be one of them) voice their opinion that this needs to be done, it will. It doesn't change the bag limits, only the dates deer hunting occurs in Alabama. Change is good when it's needed and we need it.

where i hunt in Marshall co. the bucks are starting to rut good here and wouldnt you know it......the season is over. i know last year i seen a couple buck chasing does' in a field and it was mid february. extended season would be nice however they do it,as long as we could hunt most of february here.i dont make a dent in the deer population anyway,i just would like to be able to sit in the stand when the getn is good, unfortunatly the getn good here is just starting!
Rifle....not in my hunting vocabulary!

No matter what YOU say White City Hunter, I haven't said we don't need change. But that change shouldn't be made according to what other states are doing. It should be made for the purposes stated in OUR game and fish laws. If the season is too long for you when that happens, don't hunt. Go home with the rest of Zone 2 or go to one of those other states where everybody thinks it is so grand.

This is what I would like to see: 1. Start bow Nov. 1, not Oct. 15. 2. Open gun the traditional Sat. before Thanksgiving. 3. Close gun from Dec. 10 to 25. 4. Open gun Dec. 26 thru Feb. 10. OR, just keep it like it is except extend gun and bow thru Feb. 10 for all counties south of latitude 32 degrees 30 minutes (northern tip of Montgomery). {Black Belt and southern counties get extension} P.S. Anyone who is against this is a communist.
