I got one for the taxidermist tonight. I wasn't sure where to skin him for a shoulder mount, so he's in a cooler whole. Any recommendations to get a mount done and process the deer near Huntsville? Honestly would like to do my own meat, but I've never had one mounted and didn't want to screw the cape up. Thanks.

That is a good problem to have, though.

Jerry Bryant caped one I killed last year. He is in the Harvest area. His number is 256-232-8243.

Edit - just went and looked at the picture in the bow forum. Congrats on the buck. Sounded like a great hunt!

Jenkins Deer Processing in Gurley. It's a bit off the beaten track, PM me if you're interested and I'll give you better directions.

He will cape it for you and provide the entire hide attached to the cape for the taxidermist.

He also does a great job with the meat and will process it to your specs. He has a very, very clean shop and he's a nice guy to boot.

Any processor you use should cape him out for you. They'll freeze the head and cape and then you can drop it off at a taxidermist. I know a good one in Laceys Spring. He's done several deer for me over the past 15 years and they all still look great. Send me a pm if you would like his contact info.

Call Dennis Hereford at Hereford Taxidermy 256-665-5095. His shop is in New Market but, He will also pick up your cape for you at Jenkins processing in Gurley if you take it there! He does a great job!

I wouldn't take it to Hereford unless you want to wait 2 years to get it back. My nephew took one to him last year and he still ain't got it back.

Do not freeze the head. Taxidemist hate that, almost as much as cutting the cape too short, at least the good ones. If it's been in a cooler, get it caped, leave plenty, the taxi will cut off the extra. Get it to the taxi asap. He'll skin it and flesh it asap, much easier than after frozen. If you want to drive to beautiful Scottsboro , Chris McCarver mounts a great deer, he learned from the master Stan Gross, who is great but stays behind. PM me if ya want Chris's number.
When I shoot one worthy of a mount, if the timing works out,I take them to Chris and he capes them himself. wink
Nice bow kill BTW. thumbup

Thanks for the info everyone. I rewatched some youtube videos on skinning for a mount and did it myself. Thanks again,

Dan

Take it to Tracy Hereford in Ardmore, he does great work and gets it done fairly quick.

What area did you kill him in?

It's in Chris McCarver's hands now. Saw his work on facebook and the shop. I feel confident. Thanks for all the help.
