Can I have my unloaded rifle in my truck (with a current hunting license?)

I haven't asked them because I am afraid if I do, they will spot me to search my truck and make me wait, leaving the contractors parking lot... When I am off I am ready to leave, but I do wish to go to my hunting club from work, without having to go home and get my gun.

Anyone here know the power plant policy since the new law has been enacted?

Well, I go through turnstiles, metal detectors, and pass security guards entering and leaving, as well as lunch box checks... But I see no signs in the parking lot saying 'No Firearms.'

Read the section entitled Rules for Employers that Own and Maintain Employee Parking Lots that begins on page 2.

Thanks 49er... But I am still not certain that the new law applies to a power generating utility.

I do know of a man who lost his job and was banned from ever working for Alabama Power because his vehicle was randomly searched at Miller and he had a new pistol (with the bill of sale dated the same day!)

I was told that power plants have a different set of rules than a common business, but like I said, I haven't seen a sign that says no firearms allowed on the property... I do know there are different security rules at Browns Ferry because it is nuclear, but I don't know about Miller (if fossil generators are under the same security laws)

I guess I will just have to ask, rather than risk it.

I think this is something worth asking.

I go in/out of the contractors gate and main gate numerous times at miller and wilsonville a week. Always ask for my license and nothing else. Never been searched, and I have 2 pistols in my truck at all times. If they search it, I'll show them my ccw and feel 99% sure they will tell me to leave them at the guard shack. Browns, Farley, etc I ALWAYS leave them at home, being nuclear facility they have searched my truck numerous times and don't mess around.

You have a drive in pass...
What about the contractors parking lot?
We used to be able to lock guns up in Gadsden... but that was stopped years ago.

I hope Miller (which is as anal about rules as any fossil plant in the world) will allow me to carry a hunting rifle because it will hurt me in time and money.

I don't have a pass of any kind. I'm in sales and alabama power (fleet services) is one of my accounts. I imagine the parking lot is ok for you, but ask the guard shack

I wouldn't risk my job at the power plant. My dad retired from Miller a few months ago. We was waiting on dad to get there and my son was just taking a picture of the cooling towers. The guard came out and asked for us to delete the pics.

I too go in and out of power plants with my job ... mainly Miller,Gorgas and Wilsonville in that order.

I do know of one guy who pulled up to the wilsonville guard shack. Saw the no firearms sign and told guard he would be back shortly. Came back and told the guard "Saw the no firearms sign and had to take my pistol home"

Things escalated from there. Gate guard called head of security and even though the guy never came thru the gate, AND did the right thing to try and abide by their rules he was banned from Alabama power facilities for life.

This was about 4 years ago when Wilsonville was doing all the construction there.

if you park in the parking lot outside the gate you should be fine. Coming inside the gates is a whole other story.

My wife worked at Miller Steam Plant so let me give you some advice.....don't take your gun onto the property. They restrict employees from carrying them, they will not allow a contractor.

I'm glad you ask before you or someone else on here gets caught with a firearm on plant site.

The policy hasn't changed for contractors having firearms on plant site.

It would NOT be a good idea to get caught with a firearm in your vehicle parked in the contractor parking lot and DEFINITELY NOT in your vehicle trying to go through either of the entrance gates to the plant, if you enjoy working or doing business there.

If one were found with a firearm inside their vehicle....could they win in court??Possibly... with a good cut and paste attorney.....maybe, I don't really know. But they would probably be working somewhere else in the meantime though.

There are two "Notice Signs" posted along Porter Road at the entrance to GATE #2 (which you have to drive through to get to the contractor parking lot) that state firearms are prohibited.

On occasion a K-9 Unit goes through the parking lots and if they hit on your car then you will be ask to unlock it and a search will be conducted. (There were a lot of false hits the last time this took place.)

Some replies to this post have been mere guesses or assumptions. I assure you this isn't one of them.

To ANY non-APC employees that work at (or do business with) an APC plant- I strongly suggest leaving the firearms at home unless hunting after work (or carrying a pistol) is more important than working (or doing business) there.

I'm the one who cut and pasted what attorneys had to say about it, and I never claimed to be an attorney. I didn't add or subtract from what those attorneys said in their analysis.

The following statement from the analysis is one reason the NRA/ILA should be ashamed of gutting a good gun rights bill and turning it into a gun-control bill:

Quote:
An employee terminated solely on the basis of the presence of a weapon that is in compliance with this
law may bring an action for wrongful termination against the employer. The employee may seek
damages for lost wages and other lost remuneration, but the law does not state that the employee may
seek reinstatement
.

A law like that ain't worth much to protect gun rights.

The NRA/ILA insisted on cramming it into the original bill that was meant to repeal some unconstitutional laws. That got the Business Council involved and caused a lot of unnecessary opposition from the business community.

Now we still have those same unconstitutional laws on the books, and anti-gun companies like Alabama Power can still fire people and get away with it for simply exercising their right to bear arms on their way to and from their work place.

If you are going through a gate into a secure area to park the new law still always them to restrict your possession. If that is the case, then if would not carry one. If you are not in a secure parking lot, then that it a different story.

Doekiller,

I don't think you would be able to get an employee his job back on Alabama Power property after being banned for having a firearm there under the new law. Maybe some damages and wages, but not his job. Too many other things they could find/cook up to go with the firearm charges.

Do you see something there that I don't??

We were told at our plant that the new law allowed EMPLOYEES to have guns on the property by contractors were not. With what 49er posted about not getting your job back if something happened, I wouldn't try it.
