I was at a pub in Worcester, Man earlier tonight eating dinner. I sat t the bar and looked over and see several UPS employes throwing drinks back, while in uniform. I have nothing against having a drink but does UPS not have a corporate policy against this?

I'm guessing they're harder to fire, etc. Like baseball players on steroids, etc.

I personally don't see a problem with them drinking like that, but who knows.

If they are off the clock then there shouldn't be a problem. And I can assure you that they are off the clock.

Just doesnt look professional, in my opinion. We have a policy against it for our technicians, a lot of companies do.

The employee dresses in/dresses out at home on his own time. If the company requires a uniform but has a no uniform policy while off the clock, they can provide paid time to dress in/dress out. Or the employee can choose to work elsewhere.

I don't care what company, business or city you work for. Drinking in uniform is a bad decision. You DON'T do it in gear that says VHFD. Period. No exceptions.

Drinking in your uniform shows a lack of discipline, lack of professionalism and no pride in your job. If you are given a uniform for work then wear it properly. Tuck in your shirt and pull your pants up. And a work uniform is for work. I promise you that having to go home an change before having drinks at a bar and representing the company poorly by being drunk will not kill you

Exactly.. Take the uniform off...Doesn't change who they work for....Guess that makes it ok as long as they hide it from the public... Didn't realize there was a dress code to be allowed to have a beer before going home ......

I can see how it would deter customers if they see someone from a particular company somewhere drinking while in uniform..maybe im overthinking it..speaking from a service line of work..residential electrician, ac contractor, roofer etc.. i would think it would be a common courtious to your employer to keep a good image.

There are way more employees of companies presenting bad images "on" the clock rather than drinking a beer off the clock....

How about this?

I was in the Dallas Airport last Friday waiting on a flight home and saw two Air Force members in uniform drinking a beer at a bar in the airport. Back when I was in, I would have never dreamed of doing such a thing in fact we were not allowed to wear our utility uniforms (flight suits, BDUs, etc.) off base.

They were in the chair force enough said.

Years ago you could not leave the UPS hub without having to change clothes after you got off work. UPS viewed it as a security risk having their uniforms all over the place (i.e. someone could pose as a UPS driver and commit a crime) They even went as far as destroying old delivery vehicles to keep them off the street after their useful life was over.

Let me explain it to you so you won't have to guess.

In a union shop, employees work under a contract that has been negotiated with the company. Management has the exclusive right to make work rules and to make managerial decisions such as writing company policies.

If a union employee is accused of breaking work rules, he has a right to a fair hearing under the grievance procedure that was negotiated and included in the working agreement (contract).

If the case goes all the way through the steps of the grievance procedure and is still not settled, a neutral arbitrator (usually an administrative law judge) makes a final decision. If the worker is found guilty, he can be disciplined or terminated. If he is found not to be guilty, he will likely be reinstated and awarded back pay if he was suspended during the grievance process.

Most contracts I worked under included a three day process for termination hearings to be completed. I saw several of my coworkers fired thru the years, but many were reinstated as a result of the fair hearings they were afforded.
