Yeah I've seen deer that looked black in low light. Same thing with the cats. For the record I wasn't trying to say we had black ones. The odds of a jaguar ( which is native to the southwestern United States) being black is 1 in 100,000. I would think the odds of a mountain lion or cougar being black would be the same.
If there were as many black ones as people claim to have seen there would have to be a tan one laying behind every rock to even the numbers out.
I still don't think that it's beyond the realm of possibility that there could be a big black cat roaming around though, any thing is possible in nature but the odds against it are pretty astronomical.

Well, let the ribbing begin. I saw a black panther about 15 years ago crossing a power line. At first i thought it was black lab, then i saw its long tail.I watched it thru my scope. It got down wind of me and whirled and ran back up and across the powerline toward the coosa river. This was in Lincoln. When i got back to camp, i asked my dad and a buddy,"You'll never guess what i just saw"., my buddy said a panther. I told him of all the things in the world, he could have said, why did he say panther? He said, "Did you see one"? I said yes, he asked the color and i said black. He said, well there's 2 of them then, because 2 weeks ago i saw a tan one by the slough. Believe me or not, don't care. I know what i saw. If it would have been a cat or dog, it wouldn't have winded me, and turned and ran.

Blumsden nobody is saying you (or anyone else)didn't see a black cat! What AUCoonhunter is saying is that there has NEVER in history been documented a melanistic (black) color phase cougar!

Yes, your exactly right, but i've seen and shot a black coyote before. This had a long rectangular body, with a long slim tail.

Exactly! Could it have been a melanistic phase jaguar or leopard that escaped captivity or was turned loose? There is always a possibility, but it could have also been a large feral cat. If there are these big black cats roaming the woods why don't somebody shoot one and leave it on the side of the road. The DNR can then examine it and noone will be at fault, and this discussion can come to a close. Simple as that.

I've been reading about these black cats on here since before I was a member .I told this story one time and it shut that thread down.Let's see if I can get a better result this time. A man who worked for Goodyear in Gadsden was a big coonhunter all throu the sixties. He and his sons treed and killed a big black cat in the flatwoods area of Etowha,St. Clair county in the mid to late sixties. They gave the carcass to a taxidermy shop in Gadsden. They cut off a front paw to show everybody .I personally saw and held the paw in my hand the morning after it was killed.I wish someone could check the archives at the Gadsden Times from that era to see if they could find a record of it.

What are the odds. The guy that I referred to in my previous post on this thread who saw a cougar while coon hunting retired from good year. Do you know the name of the coon hunter who killed the cat? If so pm it to me and Ill see if I can get the story from my friend also.

Looks like it happened again.I don't have any proof, but I swear it happened. The leg was cut off a couple inches above the paw.The hair on it was jet black .You could mash on the pads and the claws would retract in and out, it was that fresh.Surely there's a way to find out who had a taxidermy shop in Gadsden during that time period. They may not be living but maybe a family mamber remembers something.

All I've got to say is next time y'all see one shoot it and ill pay and lawyer fees or court costs it takes if for some reason they try to take you hunting rights away. I 100% will kill one of these bigs cats if I ever see one.
