One got loose a few years back, not 10 miles from where I live. Not sure if it was ever found, just recall the big black cat getting loose from it's pen. Happens more than most realize. EH Darby had 2 in his house over in Sheffield back in the 80's. Seen the pens in person, held regular mountain lions. Darby owned Southern Sash.

There was a fellow up here that had 2 and got a heads up the state was coming for them. The pens where empty when they got there. That happen just over the state line on the river.

My buddy sent me this pic this weekend. I said house cat but he showed the pic to a vet that said it was no way a house cat. He said the pic came from his club in Eutah AL.

that is for sure a black panther. That tree in front of it is actually about 4" in diameter. The cat is so big it just makes it look like a blade of sage grass.

The chances of a mountain lion being melanistic (black ) is 1 in 100,000....... So if there are five black ones in the whole state that means we should have a half million tan ones running around.

Actually there has never been a documented case of a melanistic mountain lion. There are melanistic phases of leopards and jaguars, but not our native cougar/Florida Panther.

I saw a wolverine on State docks road in Decatur in the early 90's. Wasn't sure what it was so came back to work and was looking at pictures of wolverines and badgers just to determine what I saw. I decided it was a wolverine and told the guys there I just saw a wolverine over on State Docks Rd.. Of course they laughed at me and I would have them. A couple days later there was a pic of it in the Decatur Daily where somebody had hit it. Article said they figured it got on a barge and decided to get of when it was docked at the river. Saw a bear cross I20 near Tuscaloosa once, and then heard on the radio about one getting run over in that area two day later. I ain't never seen nothing bigger than a bobcat. But I don't automatically dismiss people who say they do. I have heard some awfully creepy sounds in Bankhead at night.

OK, so we're back to black Leopards and black Jaguars. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think either of the two are free range on this continent, regardless of color.
I do think Barnum and Baily's train derailed in North Alabama.....bout a hundred years ago.
BTW thanks for that info Coonhunter, been trying to convince some hillbillies for 30 years there ain't any , solid black ,long tail, panthers in these parts.

I am sure that dark brown, which is a color phase of mountain lions, could be easily mistaken at dusk and dawn.
