Black cats are just like bigfoot if they were out there someone would have killed one already. to many guns and hunters in the south! Remember not everyone goes by the law thus some outlaw would have shot one by now.

I've always thought it was funny how we have a closed season on a animal that doesn't exist. Why don't they include buffalo, elk etc. What makes that cat different? Could it be they know more than they let on?

Florida panthers(Puma conculor coryi) are a subspecies of cougar(Puma conculor). So there are genetic differences there. Mountain lion, cougar, puma, panther are just all common names for a big tan cat.

I've said this in another post, but I DID kill one as a young teenager in Dale County. My little terrier used to tree all kinds of stuff behind our house and, around the swamp I grew up next to. One night my parents were gone and she treed something right behind the house over a small creek that drained into the swamp. As usual, I grabbed my gun and a head lamp (grew up coon hunting), and headed out expecting to find a coon or possum. The tree was leaning at about 45 degrees and about 10 to 15 feet off the ground there was a huge cat. It had spots like a bobcat, but was significantly larger. It also had a long tail with rings around it. Being a kid and wanting to put my hands on it, I shot it. I took it home and put it in our deepfreezer. My dad would've killed me if he'd found out I killed that thing. The next day, a friend of mine came by to see it. He took it to his stepdad who was supposedly going to have it mounted. None of us had any idea what it was. We just knew it was way too big to be a bobcat and had tail that was as long as the cat itself. Later, as an adult, I saw a special on lions on tv. It was showing the juveniles have spots, and it was then obvious to me what I'd killed.

I believe in the possibility of resident big cats in Alabama. That said, There used to be a guy at Collinsville Flea Market in the late '90's that had big cats for sale. Maybe somebody bought one and got sick of keeping it after awhile. There are just too many sightings to dismiss out of hand.

I have seen a big cat. Actually, saw it twice about a year and a couple of miles apart. It was in the late 80's and both sightings were on the back side of the Scotch WMA, around Goat Hill the 1st time and near Phillips Crossing the next time. We were coon hunting both times and I am absolutely certain of what we saw. The 1st time, he just crouched down and slunk away watching his shadow ahead of him in the lights. The next time, he was in the ditch of the dirt road and he quickly turned his head from the lights and then sprung up the bank and ran away as we got close. It was a deep tan, almost chestnut and I can understand where in low light people would claim it was black.

I have not seen one since, or any indication of one.
BUT, I am quite sure of what we saw then!

Many outlaws are smarter than to show it off. I firmly believe there are black cats out there. I know that the biologists say they don't exist but I know too many trustworthy people just like some of the folks on here that are not making it up and are not mistaken. They are here and some have been killed, but they don't go showin them off. It is just a matter of time before someone comes out with a good picture and/or a dead one. It will happen.

My understanding is a solid black panther would have to be a black Leopard and the only way there is one of those running around Alabama is if he came from a zoo or circus. I believe there could be ,a few Mt. Lions or Fla. Panthers but I ain't buying the big jet black panther/leopard.
