I read all these articles about the large number of wild hogs in Alabama and I've yet to see one. I'm 53 years old grew up in Marshall County and live way out in the country in Calhoun County now. I hunt all over this state and I have NEVER even seen one. I don't believe all the stuff I read about how many there are. Even the Game Wardens were talking about how big a problem they are in Choccolocco Mgmt Area but they only let you hunt them for 1 week or so. Now don't you think if they were a big problem they would have a longer season? I think it's all Hogwash!

Think what you will. They're a major problem.

From what little I have seen pigs are funny. You can go to a piece of property where they are and it will look like someone took a middle buster plow through the woods and you can go to a property a mile away and not see sign of a pig ever being there.

Take a stroll through the palmettos at the end of the South Road on Lowndes WMA. I was out there between 20-25 times from archery to turkey season and saw hogs every time except a handful. On the few times I didn't see them I heard them in the thickets. I believe there was only one time I didn't see or hear them. I ended up killing 5 and saw a bunch of others killed.

I did hunt Lowndes about 3 years ago and yes I did see hog sign but I didn't see a hog. Plus with as many hunters that converged on that place I can't imagine a hog being able to survive. Again, if they were the problem that its made out to be where are they? I don't see em...anywhere. Please let me know where they are a major problem...I'd like to help with the problem.

And I suppose you think all these dead pig pictures were created with photoshop? Come look at the dried pig blood in the back of my pickup.. I have video of the kills if that's not good enough for ya.

I agree, there's no hogs in the lower or upper delta or in clark county. I know this for a fact.

I have no idea what I am gonna do in the morning now that I know there are no hogs!!!!

LOL

But, seriously.....the areas they mainly reside in are usually either Private, or tightly regulated. Hogs do NOT like a lot of pressure.

They are in Choccolocco. I've seen them on the North side, really close to the Eastern boundary. They are there and it's very apparent the places they have made home. Won't be long before you will see them all over the place.

Ok then it looks there are a few hogs around but when I read the articles it makes it out like they are all over Alabama and they are taking over. That is not true. If they really wanted to get rid of the hogs in Choccolocco then why don't they let people hunt em more than 1 week. Doesn't really sound like it's a big problem there.

Yeah people whine about having hogs on their hunting land but I haven't even found anyone who will let me buy a hog hunting permit. People will sell the turkey hunting rights on their club but won't let someone kill pigs, I don't get it.

For those who have been hunting pigs for a long time see how they are spreading. I've only been hunting them two years and the pigs have tripled or quadrupled where I hunt. Game cameras and kill numbers from one year to the next don't lie.

Look at the Feral Swine Mapping system done by UGA and see how Alabama's hog population has filled in.

Ok then why don't they allow hunting feral pigs on the mgmt area other than 4 days or 1 week? Are they trying to protect them?

Well that would be a good question for the game warden or state wildlife agency. I have many issues with Alabama's hunting laws.

For one if they consider pigs bad enough to have no season or limit why can't we hunt them at night with night vision?
Let's face it your best kill times in the summer are at night.
No lasers or night vision according to the law. Those types of laws are playing heavily into the pig's favor and it shows.

I get it. Because there is not wild pig problem in Alabama. Mgmt areas don't let you hunt them hardly at all. There is no night hunting allowed and people are charging up to $600.00 to take others on a hog hunt! All this would not be happening if there was a true problem.

Wild hogs are more widespread than you think. You have obviously not seen areas of damage where they are out of control. They are a major problem in a lot of places. They are smart and very sensitive to hunting pressure.
I know of a land owner that trapped over 50 pigs last summer on only 300 acres and they saw just as many during deer season as they did the previous year.

Elkhunter and Hogwild have killed hundreds of pigs each of the last few years and I bet they would tell you there is not an end in sight. You may remove most of them from one property but as soon as you stop trapping/hunting them they will be back.

I'm not sure why the seasons on WMA's are limited but I'm not sure there would be too many more hogs killed. They may become more nocturnal and would move to areas where hunters can't access.

I think the reason landowners/clubs don't allow access for hog hunting is because they don't believe it would have an impact on the population. Killing a few hogs during the summer isn't going to have much of an impact on the overall population. Killing hogs isn't as easy as you would think.

I work all over central and south Alabama and have seen hog sign in almost every county I have worked in. At least 21 counties I just named off where I have seen hogs or hog sign with my own eyes. I would say we have a problem. They may be more scattered in north Alabama but as you come south they are more widespread.

Again, if you are questioning that they are a problem it's just because you have not seen the widespread damage.

I haven't had access to hog land since I moved from Monroeville. If anybody has some and wants some help, let me know.
