I recently moved to a house on the cahaba next to grants mill and I have been fishing quite a bit with some success. I wanted to know if anyone had any tips on what tackle I should be using on the Cahaba this time of the year or just any tips in general. I've had the most luck so far with just a classic top water Repala.

Spinning gear with 4" gold Rapala or Shyster spinners. Watermelon worms work good too. Largemouths, Spotted, and Redeye Bass...

No, but I want to float and fish from bass pro to Overton. Long trip this time of year and water dependent.
Anyone float this area this time of year with a kayak?

I've floated Bass Pro to Centreville....

word on the Cahaba...do not under any circumstances try to float the river when rain runoff has it way up. It can be a very dangerous river.

had success in the past catching and floating helgamites over the shoals down towards centreville. you'll catch everything with them including bass.

Bass Pro to Centerville would be quite a trip! What time of the year?
I know not to try it after some of the storms we have had recently and have been watching the flow data to try and put myself in a floating situation instead of dragging ; )

we floated Helena to Centreville in june, pulled a lot, then it rained and the river rose and we shot rapids. Made the trip in three days.....

You have the Redeye Spotted Bass in there. They are small but aggressive little things. I fished the little Cahaba in Birmingham years ago and they were fun to catch.

I like throwing a weighted lizard (pumpkin seed or watermelon). Fish it in the swift water and when it hits the slack water hold on.

ROLL TIDE !!!

I kayaked from bass pro to grants mill yesterday and it took about 3 hours fishing. Caught a 3 1/2 pounder and a couple 2 pounders, all largemouths. Also caught a few little red eyes and they do fight for there size. Just fished with the same classic top water Repala.

Before or after the rain?
I am a rookie with good equipment and desire to keep it with me and not see it float down river without me and or stuck on the side of the river calling 911 smirk

If you need a tag along let me know!

I went late afternoon when we had a break in the rain. The water level was perfect yesterday, but it has gotten to high right now. Saturday will be the day to go this weekend. Wish I could go but the beach won't be to bad either lol.

Thinking about going this weekend, anyone want to lead a float from Bass Pro or Grants Mill to show a couple of rookies the ropes?
Or even offer tips or suggestions.
It only takes me one time to learn the basics.
