I just joined this site as I got back into deer hunting this September after 24 yrs and I could use some advice from the pro's. I live in Bibb Co. and am hunting on my parents land which is about 5+ acres but surrounded by alot of unhunted land. I took a 100 lb doe Thanksgiving morining from my 15 ft ladder stand but have seen little since then. The deer are visiting the small food plot but it seems to be everyother night. Today it was raining so I decided to just do some looking around. Last week while in my stand I heard alot of scraping sounds and I found the answer toay. About 20 ft from where I shot the doe I found a scrape with feces in it with a rub, five feet from there was another scrape with feces. Both the feces and the rub were made last night/early this morning. As I made my way through the woods I found scrapes and rubs every where. These were not here 2 weeks ago I know. Now this is where I need some advice, how would you hunt this area based on this knowledge and knowing that the woods are really to thick to get a shot at a deer without having to be 15 yds from him? I am shooting a Weatherby 308, and my stand sits in the bend on an old road bed, there are 7 active deer trails that merge onto the road bed in front of my stand. I tried a mock scrape but no luck. I thought about using doe estrus but I dont think the deer are in full rut yet. I am torn between trying to call him in with doe grunts/estrus bleat or a buck grunt/bleat. I dont think rattling will work very well as there are not very many buck here(I think one is part cow though based on the size of his tracks)
So any advice that could be given would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I would just sit there and wait. The more time you are in the woods the better. I would not worry about calls or scents, it sounds like they are already there, you just need to be there when they are.

The more time you spend in the woods the luckier you get. I would resist the temptation to walk around though.
I could give you a lot better advice but it would require several days of onsite evaluation. smile

I had a lease in central Bibb Co for ten years up until last year. Sounds like your deer are right on target for the rut as we experienced it on that lease. He will come those scrapes you just have to be there when he does. Of course, a lot of those are made at night. If it is that thick in the area I am sure that he is not far away and with that many scrapes you may be in his core. (Thus the resist the temptation to stomp out the area comment. That is good advice)

Get to a point where you can see as much of that road bed as possible and wait him out. Him or one of his buddies will be along shortly.

Good luck and post pics when you get him.

Most scraping and rubbing are done at night. The true exception to this after a rain. IF THERE ARE HOT SCRAPES ,THEY WILL BE WORKED AND FRESHENED AS SOON AS THE RAIN STOPS. You need to be on stand before the rain stops. You've recieved some good advise. By calling you only alert the deer that something is in the area. I think a stealth approach will serve you better. Sneak in and out, play the wind and donb't leave too much human scent ! Good Luck

RESIST the urge to walk all over your property every time you go out there. You are just satisfying your own curiosity, which based on your scouting already requires no further exploration. The more you encroach on the place and stink it up, the better chance you have of pushing the deer out of the area.

Forget the attractants and calls - focus on keeping yourself downwind of the areas that you feel the deer are most likely to move in. If the wind is "wrong" for that day, hunt from another angle - don't just think that you have to get in your stand because that's the only place you've got. It's usually better to be on the ground and have the wind right than be up a tree but the wind blowing your scent into the hunting area.

On such a small tract of land, you don't want to do things that will call attention to yourself - work on being as "invisible" as possible, and that includes such tiny details as where/how you park your vehicle (killing your headlights when you arrive in the predawn, etc.) Instead of evaluating the deer, evaluate yourself with questions like "What things do I do that would alert a deer to my prescence?"

The deer will come. Get in the woods and enjoy the moment.

Thanks for all the tips, I hadnt thought about the headlights and how that can signal your presence. Got in the stand this morning but the wind was pretty bad, supposed to rain today so hopefully tomorrow will be better if this afternoon doesnt work out.
By the way, what is clorox stump?
