What is your goal? Corn is never "best" for the deer...it's pretty much candy, with very little nutritional value. Good for taking camera pictures, but not much benefit nutritionally for the deer.

I hear what you're saying Hogwild, and fully expected to get this response from someone. However, I think the whole "winter stress" thing in Alabama is highly overrated. Up in the northern states...yep, it's a real thing. Here? We hardly have enough cold weather to sour acorns, much less kill most of the natural browse for deer. Are the bucks worn out from the rut right now? Yeah, probably so. Is it to the point that they need something high in fat content to help them survive and regenerate themselves? No...not here in Alabama.
I've never seen, heard, nor know anyone who has seen or heard of a deer starving to death in Alabama.

Big difference in starving to death and being in optimum condition. Also, site dependent....there ARE hungry deer in AL. The deer that are pushed onto my place right now due to the high water are hungry! Some are pretty malnourished by the time they leave their little islands and such. Maybe. But, there are still lots better options than corn for deer in the condition you speak of. that's why I asked in my original response what his goal was.

Is rabbit feed the same thing as deer feed? It's all pretty close, I think. I know of several folks who feed catfish feed to deer.

If I had "deep pockets", it would be about 50/50 corn and low protein pellets in fall and winter. Then straight high protein in spring and summer. Think corn is high, soybeans waaay higher. You can probably get high octane deer chow cheaper than soybeans now.

Is rabbit feed the same thing as deer feed? I don't know about now but Purina rabbit feed use to have alfalfa meal in it. That would be real good. Someone above posted about feeding catfish feed to deer. Why do that? It has a high concentration of animal protein in it.
