We are about to put in all new flooring. Wood downstairs and carpet upstairs with carpet on the steps. When I put my foot on the step my heel hangs off the back. Is there any way to add width to the step? I sure dont want to shorten my feet.

Go get a board stretcher.

It takes a long time to grow an old friend.

Yeah there is way if room allows it. You gonna have to completely rebuild them

Board stretchers only work to make boards longer. He wants to make these wider. Sheesh.

Seriously the only way to fix it is to tear all the old ones up and replace with wider boards.

No easy way. If you just go wider with the treads and the boards hang over, you could hang your toes as you go up from one to another. You might could add 1/2" and get by. If you needed to add much at all you'd have to tear out the whole stair case and lengthen it, adding more steps. Most cities have codes stairs must be. Big mess that cost lots of $, doubt you want them wider that bad.

This is the correct way to do it right you need to lengthen the runners

Just add a 2x on each riser. That will give you an extra inch and a half. And ypur going to cover it anyway.

Stood up on its edge. Won't have to do it the last as you will be stepping onto the floor or landing.

Take your high heels off before you go up the stairs! smile

I wear a 14 or 15 in most shoes. Mine dont fit on any stair treads. Just learn to walk up stairs on the balls of your feet and get on with life.

That will work good. To add depth to the tread you've got to add thickness to the riser or your tread will stick out too far.

When you add the 2 by to the riser you lengthen the tread above, but shorten the one below and so on. No gain in tread width. To lengthen the treads you have to lengthen the overall length of the run. So if you have 12 treads and want them 2" wider, your stair has to become 24" longer. No way around it. Also to be a comfortable stair the risers should be from 6" to 8" and the treads 9-11". The sum of two risers and one tread should be between 24 and 25". I.e. for a common 7/11 stair, the sum of two risers and one tread is 25" (7+7+11=25). The risers and treads should be exactly the same step to step. If you are off more than about 3/16" you will notice in your stride up and down.
