Saw one at a local Wal Mart yesterday. The $179 price tag caught my attention.

Surely this thing is junk since it's that cheap, right.

Wrong. Did some research and apparently it's a cousin to the Remington 870, but with a thicker stamped steel receiver and better internal parts and stock.

It appears to be a GREAT truck/HD gun, especially for the money.

I'm picking mine up from Bass Pro in an hour. They have them for $199. I emailed the store asking if they had them in stock. Replied in a few minutes saying they had one, and had already put my name on it to hold it. I replied back with the Wal Mart location and price of the one I saw and asked if they would match.

Got an email back 5 minutes later. They called the Wal Mart store, confirmed availability and price, and honored my request.

Looks like they use pretty much all standard 870 parts and accessories EXCEPT for the barrel. Plan to add a +2 magazine extension and a sling. Not bad at all.

So, for under $200 out the door with tax included, it's not bad at all.

Pros:
Same Parent Company as Remington
Heavy Made
Reliable Design (870)
Available Parts (870)
Super-Cheap Price

Cons:
Made in China (why it's so cheap)
Internal Tooling/Finish is rougher than an 870
Cannot use 870 Barrel
Have to slightly modify some 870 parts to work (mag tube extension, stock)

I have one in a standard length. My Remington 11/87 got jammed up and used it as my back up during dove season. Can't beat them for the price.

Have you looked at the Mossberg Maverick 88? It's a stripped down version of a Mossberg 500. $179.99 at Academy.

Yeah, but I've heard the Mavericks have issues with the pump forearm breaking, requiring a $100 fix. Also, this BPS gift card is burning a hole in my wallet.

Does it have dual action bars?

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

Yes. 870 thru and thru. Heavy duty extractor and firing pin too.

I'll get some good pics later

I've had an maverick 88 for 3 duck seasons now. Including using it during dove an the occasional dog drive. Never once had an issue. Only thing different between the 88 an 500 is the for end and safety. Same trigger group and all

Original stock and forearm have a highly textured surface for excellent grip considering its hard plastic

Close up of the receiver

I used dark gray Rustoleum automotive primer, followed by Rustoleum Dark Taupe Satin and Krylon Satin Italian Olive. Finished everything with a coat of Krylon Matte Clear.

Just updating the thread.

Repainted it last weekend. Didn't like the lighter tone on the steel so I stripped it all off and started over. Went with Labrador Brown on the steel and Flat Taupe on the furniture.

Just ordered an ATI Talon Adjustable Folding Pistol Grip Stock for it. Looking forward to trying it out.

Well, the ATI stock came in. I'm VERY pleased with how nice this thing is - especially for under $100!

So, with this addition, the pump officially transforms from a Home Defense shotgun into an evil Assault Weapon. < I miss that one.

Anyway, pics of it.

Nice packaging. MADE IN USA.

Collpases to a surprisingly small package. That's a 8.5" X 11" piece of paper it's laying on.

Pistol Grip is nice and large, and the backstrap is rubber, so plenty of grip here.

The "Scorpion" buttpad is a little harder/firmer than I was expecting. I'll get a closer look at it this evening when I disassemble everything to paint it.

With the installation of this stock, I will have a grand total of just under $300 in this setup including tax on the gun and shipping on the stock. I already had the paint and the sling, so those don't count!

I'm very pleased considering that a Rem 870 Home Defense with collapsable stock is $599 at cabelas, plus tax. A regular 870 Home Defense is $399 plus tax, then you still have to add the stock on top of that for another $100 and change. Either way, you're looking at $540 minimum for a comparable setup, just with a different name stamped on the receiver.

That is going to look really slick. Will you be painting the new stock to match? thumbup
