Why not open the land to gun hunting the whole season? Let us get in a few more good memories. Good question. Also, why not open all WMA's to gun hunting the entire gun deer season? There is a WMA in North Alabama that only allows archery hunting for deer, but that closes when waterfowl season opens - I don't understand that one either.

X2 If it's there for the use of the people, why can't the people use it? Restrictions, most of them unnecessary, always go along with government control of lands.

I just found out that the company mining Coosa is the Alabama Graphite Company. According to their map on their website, they HAVE obtained mineral rights to mine the FOREVER WILD land. If this is the case, the state lied to me. They probably would not want this information out with the Forever Wild vote coming up. Here is a link to the company. Just click the August 2012 PDF. Good work!! The truth is, Mulberry Fork and Cahaba WMAs both are covered up with methane gas wells. That's why there are all the roads leading to the "dots" on Google Earth Maps. Usually at least one gas well per 40 acres or less. And there is coal underneath. Some has already been stripped. Drummond's Camp Creek underground mine portal is in the area of the Mulberry Fork lease. Walter Energy's new underground mine surface operations west of the Warrior River will likely expand onto the property in the years to come. Underground mines need fans and intake shafts for ventilation. Workers have to be able to access those air shafts. Surface rights owned or leased by the government doesn't necessarily translate into a forever "wild" state. Matters of revenue from timber operations on the lands and other factors such as lost revenue for local governments due to property taxes and local industry taxes being lost will not simply go away. Those revenues will either be retained or be made up somehow.

Cliff,
I live in Jefferson County. Looks like FW has purchased just less than 3500 acres of land to be preserved forever within 1-1/2 hours drive of the most populated area of our state. Of the 227,000 acres purchased, that is less than 2%.
I remember hearing my father-in-law talk about why the interstate highways ended in Jefferson County and the politics behind it when I was a kid. Politics is not absent in FW. It is a government program after all.
It might look good on a map or a commercial to see that we have FW land on the Gulf Coast or the Tennessee state line, but in reality, it's not very feasible for people who live in central Alabama to to drive two-three hours or more to enjoy those lands very often.
We have more pressing issues that need to be addressed right now. The timing of this election on this amendment was no accident. We need to see what happens next year before we decide whether to expand the FW program. It will continue at its current level regardless of our vote in this election. you made my point as to why it needs to continue.
If it affects the environment it affects the wildlife and fishes too!

I'm gonna boycott graphite/carbon arrows because of this! Of course, I only shoot aluminum anyway.
