I've seen green fields get so big they turn yellow and die. Got one that is getting on up there. Will it hurt it to mow it? Or do we just need to let it go. Never mowed one was wondering if it would kill it?

Mow it, will keep it tender and actively growing. Probably won't have much action on them till the massive acorn crop starts to dwindle.....

If it were mine I wouldn't touch it. They will use it. Give them time. They will eat the cereal grasses regardless of how big they get in the fall/winter, AND it is about to get cool enough to stunt their growth anyway.

Definitely mow or weed eat them. Once wheat, oats etc gets to high deer can't digest it.

Never mowed one was wondering if it would kill it? How tall are they Like 8in or knee deep. If they are only 6-8 in tall and are turning yellow it will more than likey be due to the lack of Nitrogen.

As the grass matures it does become more tough, and probably less attractive. They will still eat it. By December these tall plots will have more pressure on them.

I think I'm going to experiment. This field is close to the house and I'm going to mow one strip and compare it to the unmowed

If they are turning yellow I would say throw some fert on them. Yellow isn't normal.

They are not yellow. Just from past experience the ones that grew too tall would turn yellow. It's as green as it can be.

Definitely mow or weed eat them. Once wheat, oats etc gets to high deer can't digest it. Not true at all. Deer are ruminants just like cows. They chew food just enough to swallow it then chew it again later to digest it. If grains (wheat, oats, rye ) get too high then they won't eat it because they can't digest it. Happened on our lease last year......fields got knee high and no deer being seen so we weed eated bunch of plots and deer where everywhere eating the new growth.

We used to plant 1/2 of all our fields for bow plots and the other half of the same field opening weekend for rifle season. Every deer would walk thru the bow plots to get to the younger, shorter wheat . Mow it to keep it growing and not fall over during January.

Mow it. I had a field one year that got so tall it Layed over by November and molded underneath. The deer wouldn't touch it. That's the only time it's ever happened though. Keep it short for now.

Is this the result of planting too early?

Is this the result of planting too early? Sounds like you need to plant later - we plant about the middle of Oct

Tracker, indeed it is.
MS hunter, I appreciate the lecture on deer, but it wasn't needed. Partial truth to what you said is that it is more easily digested while tender and young. In the real world deer run out of young tender shoots about June, and they continue to thrive on mature grasses, forbes, and briars all summer. Amazing how that works.
