Anyone else heard this? I know they had some issues with judges, police and some fire officials and some form of scandal back in July, but laying off the entire department?
Someone is putting their own head in the chopping block if someone has a delayed emergency response that results in a loss of life.

I just went back to where I saw it and it was removed, maybe there is nothing to it.

Wasn't Harpersville where they were contracting out there court enforcement? What they were doing is contracting out probation services. Then they were putting people in jail with no bond when they could not pay the money owed to the private probation company for their services. Basically it worked like this. You get a fine, you can't pay it all at once. So, the Judge puts you on probation until you can pay it. So, you have to go see this private company (that is paying the city, not being paid by the city). The company charges you a monthly fee in addition to what you are suppose to pay for the fine. If you miss a payment to them, they tell the Judge to lock you up until you can pay. That is debtor's jail and it is not legal and has not been for over 200 years. They had people that ended up paying several thousand dollars when their original fine was on;y a few hundred. They also kept one person in jail over a year on a traffic ticket because of failure to pay the fine. That is WAY MORE than the law allows. The allegations are that the city was getting kick backs and spreading the money around to the higher ups. The Circuit Court of Shelby County shut them down and took over their court system. Without that gravy train, they can't fund their kingdom.

Harpersville isn't the only town that was doing this, they were just the worst. Several others have been sued recently.

Just talked to a neighbor friend who is a Harpersville officer.
The Fire Dept is not shut down as of yet but they are talking about it. I asked about the PD and he said no but that it looked like there were laying off 3 or 4 more officers.
I asked about the investigation into the city officials. He said the city didn't know about any of the stuff going on but the judge did, and he will be the one to take the fall.

Hoover uses that same private agency I think, not 100% sure though. I heard it was close to 90 municipalities in AL use that service.
