From 0 to 400 yards. What (non ballistic) scope magnification do you use?

Yes I know some people only have shots out to 100-150 yards but that’s not the question.

I might be dumb, but what do you mean by non-ballistic. As in, plain reticle?

I keep mine on 6x, but will crank it to 12x for anything past 200yds. It’s worked out to 550yds so far.

Yes plain reticle instead of bdc. Just trying to cut out all the potential bdc suggestions.

I like as much zoom as I can get. You lose light at those high zoom powers but if you got good daylight why not?

Aim small miss small is what Benjamin Martin always said.

I prefer more magnification beyond 200 yards but situations dictate how much I dial up the magnification. Low light is keep it at 12x or less and if i want a wide field of view I crank it down. Made plenty of shots in the 265-350 yard range at 12x or less.

2.5-10 is fine for 99% of the deer hunting we do in Alabama. If it was going to be a power line or bean field rifle I'd probably put a 5-25 on it

SWFA 6x, but it’s a mil reticle. Very reliable scopes and I paid $210 for mine during a Black Friday sale. They’ve come out with a gen 2 with built in zero stop, but the price increased to $350. They offer different fixed power scopes and some adjustable power scopes.

They’re hard to beat.

2-10 is perfect for those yardages.

I tend toward higher magnification. I might have the scope set on 2-3x, but once I get ready to shoot, I dial up as much as I can. Usually 5-6x inside 100, up to 12x or higher past that.

I shoot a 3-15x50 Vortex Razor LHT with their G4i BDC reticle. It does have a couple hash marks but it’s not like a full on Christmas tree reticle you see in most of the long range scopes. My favorite scope that I’ve ever owned

One note about scope magnification. There is no industry standard to define magnification. I've compared scopes side by side looking at objects while set on the same power. There's definitely a difference between brands on how large the image appears when at 6x, 12x etc.

I was taught to shoot on 5x. That’s how dad did it and that’s how I did it for a long time. More often than not I still want my move the magnification much over 6x between 250-350. Further than that I start to crank it up some. But if I suspect I may have a shot that far I bring a rifle/scope package for it. Quite different from the ones I shoot 200 or less.

A quality scope with good glass and the upper power 10-12 X with a hunting reticle like a Duplex on the heavy side or German #4 is fine . Lighted reticle is a plus .

My two main hunting scopes are currently a 4.5-29 and a 6-36.

The higher magnification comes in extremely handy when trying to identify which buck it is at 385 yards standing in a cutover with the sun casting a glare on everything.

We are selective on which bucks to shoot (or more importantly not shoot) and sometimes the only difference between a shooter and a non-shooter is a slight difference in brow tines.

Had a great 3yr at 250 yards this year that I could not positively identify at noon in a cutover on less than 20x due to the glaring off everything.

Now I’d have zero problems “killing” deer out to 400 yards with a 10x scope, it just might not be the correct deer.

so i recently bought a new to me rifle. rem 700 cdl sf .270 wsm 24" barrel hs precision stock with a titanium fluted bolt. pretty cool rifle i think. i have a few extra scopes sitting around and trying to decide which one to go with. 1 meostar 3-9x50 1 meostar 3.5-10x50
and a conquest v4 3-12x56. honestly trying to get away from 56mm scopes. i may just sell them all and get something else.

Nice rifle. To take advantage of its range, you could get a SWFA 3-15x42 for less than $800 new or a Maven RS1.2 2.5-15x44 for $1200. Both scopes have zero stop, but only the Maven is illuminated.

My go to scope is a Zeiss 3x9 x 50mm for most all ranges. I don’t have the luxury of a tripod or rest so the best I can do is free hand or propping the gun up on my elbow in my climber. I don’t see how these guys use these high magnification scopes. Must be shooting from some kind of rest.
