Heading back to Cullman. My wife loved downtown Cullman, the little hotel we stayed in, the restaurants, shops, etc, etc. Well, Octoberfest is Oct 3-5th. Booking the room tonight. She wants to take the canoe, of course, but she doesn't wanna do the Sipsey Fork again. I see a couple of alternatives that both look good on Google Earth....

Eightmile Creek/Broglen River from Welti Rd SW (Cnty Rd 703) down to Hwy 91 in Hanceville or the Duck River from Hwy 278 down to Hwy 91 in Hanceville. We look to get a lot of rain this week so I'm guessing both would be in good shape to go in two weeks baring a bunch more rain. Both are right at 8 miles which should make for a somewhat casual day.

Maybe something on the Mulberry Fork? Wife has been asking about the Mulberry Fork but she can't paddle for crap. Still doesn't know her left from her right....... She can catch the hell outa some fish though! Looks like Cnty Rd 747 down to Hwy 31 is manageable although it is by far the longest at 11 miles. It would certainly be an all day deal.

Side Note: How is it possible that Cullman, AL has three rivers that run near it and I've never heard of but one of them?

Cullman is an awesome little town. Duck River reservoir would be good for a laid back float as would the original reservoir, Lake Catoma. Y'all have fun while you're here.

If you want something that would be peaceful (I haven't been if several years) look at Ingrams lake. It would be a put and and take out from the same place deal. I've never been in a canoe or kayak, so I can't judge how far you could get, but I would think it would still be low key and a nice trip.

Theres a park on the south end of Garden city where you can take out if you float the mulberry. The couple of miles above that has some good spots. The park is just above the hwy31 bridge. There would be several places to put in depending on how far you want to float. Brogdon river is pretty low right now. Mulberry looks pretty floatsble. I crossed over the brogdon a few days ago and remember thinking how low it was. Good luck.

After the next few days of rain the Mulberry will be rolling. We have family land on the Mulberry in Garden City.

This is my concern with Mulberry. I'm pretty good with the canoe, but my upfront paddler sucks. She's there to fish, not paddle!

I've booked the hotel and registered for the 10K. We will have the canoe in the truck and hope to find somewhere to drop it in Sunday AM.

Took the tour of Cullman and Blount Counties today. The Broglen looks doable, but Duck River needs rain. Only issue is that where I wanted to put in on Cnty Rd 703 has no parking signs all around the bridge there. Not risking it. Guess I’ll need a driver or a motorcycle to use that one.

Looked at the Mulberry Fork. Went up where the Duck comes in. There was a place to park there, but someone dumped a bunch of rip-rap rocks there. No way to park. I found a little turn off on Cnty Rd 541. It had a little fire hydrant there, but think I can squeeze the wife’s car in there without blocking it. That’ll make it 6 miles from there to Garden City all on the Mulberry.

Garden City facility is first class. One day f the nicer ones I’ve seen. Kayak slides, paved parking, and bathrooms. Very nice.

10K in the AM. Oktoberfest after. Reservations at All Steak. Wake up and paddle on Sunday.

If you go back to eat in Cullman try 412 public house. Better than all steak IMO

We ate there last time. It was very good.

Dominated my age group in the 10K. Finished just out of the top 10 and 1st in my age group. Nothing like drinking big beers at 9AM.
