All this rain a canoe will or might be ok this year.normally it's alot of dragging wimmens and children's over rocks. Still a kayak will be buch better gliding over rocks My old town 169 has been great on big river very big and stable but normally rough this time of year dragging with low water but yes I'll agree about volcanic rocks in little river.they definitely skin up a canoe ... badly
Haven't floated much since buying a big motor boat again but still have a canoe.id do kayaks if I done it over again
Now a canoe float in March is fun as crap if you got the balls sometimes.been a long time but they are fast and fun trips in right condition

We did the canoe more because I was taking my wife, most times a dog, and all of our gear. We got the 16’ and in retrospect a 15’ might have been better but the seating and stability are better in the 16’. Invest in a long keel guard right off the bat. It will eat up the scratches and impacts of those sharp rocks on the Cahaba south of West Blockton. I just added one to mine after a couple of years of abuse.

I have a canoe 14’ that is 42” wide with a molded center seat with hatch, rod holders and waterproof compartment.
it is about perfect for 2 people, once you put good seat backs/stadium seats on it.
I also have a 11’ long and 32” wide fishing kayak it’s super comfortable and great for one person. It’s more maneuverable and faster but Doesn’t seem to be as stable as the canoe.
The canoe seems to be more utilitarian and can hold 2x what the kayak will In People and gear but is too big for one person to handle easily
What ever you do get some wheels that strap to it for moving it around.
I have had my canoe since 05 got some wheels recently and they are definitely game changers for 35$

This is good advice. I'll add that most of the wheeled carts only have pull straps and not ratchet straps. Replace them immediately with ratchet straps to prevent them from coming loose. Also, a snatch block with 100' of rope to match are a good idea. The variance between put ins and take outs around the state are vast.

Depends on the Canoe. I prefer a Canoe just because they are more versatile than a kayak but I have considered getting into the dedicated fishing kayak setup. There is no wrong answer really it's all just superficial wants and needs.
Canoes are not all created equal. For example I have 2 Old Town canoes and a $4k Wenonah . Of the 3 the best for the Cahaba, Hatchet, etc. is an older Old Town Charles River...... In fact.... It's not even close.

I have had my canoe since 05 got some wheels recently and they are definitely game changers for 35$ Bustinbeards took me on a Cahaba float and that canoe is by far the most comfortable I've ever been in on a fishing trip. However, the option I prefer is still a flat bottom aluminum. I have a 10' that is 32" wide at the transom and a very comfortable folding seat on the front. It's stable enough for even an old man like me to make a reasonable float. It's nowhere near as easy to paddle as a canoe, but as long as you have current and are just floating that isn't much of a problem. All this rain has gotten the creek flow up and is making me consider a trip. It's been a while since I've done a creek float by myself. I'll probably chicken out; don't wanna ruin the weekend of the rescue squad.
All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
