I’ve been a member of the North Sumter Hunting Club near Emelle, AL for 8 years. Starting my 9th year coming up. We are looking for 3 members. This is an updated post from 2020. Our membership is 12 total. One of the camp owners passed away this spring and 2 members transferred out of state for work. Here are some details:
- 4000 leased acres. Adjoins the camp house and their 40 acres - 40 green fields with shooting houses. Salt/mineral dumps on each field - Multiple ladders in hardwoods - Main camp house and 40 acres with water/sewer, washer/dryer, 3 ovens/stove, big screen tv in house and on porch, multiple refrigerators, chest freezer - Enclosed skinning shed with hot/cold water, heat, fridge to store meat overnight, electric hoist - 100/200 yard shooting range with bench next to camp house - Spots to hook up travel trailers - Pole barns to park utv/atv out of the weather. - 12 member maximum - NO guests. Immediate family ok. Wife, child - Property managed by State of Alabama game biologist for last 11 years. Went first 3 years with a NO buck policy. We pull all jawbones, weigh all deer and fill out a stand log for each hunt. - Now it’s 2 bucks (3 1/2 or older) (There is a NO CULL policy). 3rd buck must score 130’”. Biologist usually wants us to shoot around 25 does. All the hogs you can shoot. NO TURKEYS. Mossy Oak leases the club for turkey season - Once a year planting. We switched most of the plots over from Outfitters Blend to clover. All fields were spread with several tons of lime twice in the last 6 years - Gravity feeders throughout property. Fenced in to keep out hogs - 90 % of property is pine plantation. Different stages of growth so a cutting doesn’t ruin the property. Large creek runs the length of the property with several branches throughout. This is where the hardwoods are. - 2 tractors on property with all implements
Dues:
-$2750 yearly dues lease payment -a monthly assessment which averages $150 a month. Depends on number of members and camp expenses. These include; seed, fertilizer, corn/protein, electricity, propane, tv satellite, water, tractor time and fuel/maintenance, property tax. 2 new guys joined last year and wrote out an additional check for $1800. They didn’t want to write monthly checks. -If you bring a trailer you will need a power pole and will receive your own meter. You will still share the general camp bill.
The owner lives in Meridian, MS. He loves to come to camp but he rarely hunts. The rest of us are spread out. Birmingham, Pensacola, Biloxi, Mobile, Kentucky, New Jersey. Hunter pressure is very light.
If you join the kitchen for $100 a season all meals are provided. Breakfast, lunch and supper. I cook most of the suppers and so far everyone seems to enjoy this camp feature. The kitchen, refrigerators and freezers stay stocked all season.
The owner resides in Meridian. (His partner/owner died this year) He follows the same exact rules we do. He pays the same monthly assessment we do. These are the rules in a nut shell. This is a little to no drama club. There is no debate on who is in charge or what the rules are. It’s in writing and they apply to all of us. Our efforts are starting to pay off. There are plenty of mature bucks on the property. We feel the clover will benefit horn growth this year since the bucks will be able to browse this high protein food source during their antler growth.
Call either of us if you have questions.

Wanted to provide an update. We picked up a new member this weekend. He’s a UPS pilot from Meridian, MS that is based in Louisville, KY. We are now looking for 2 new members.
Also, when I updated the ad I missed the dues price. University of South Alabama increased their lease fees a couple of years ago, as did everyone else, and our insurance went up. Our dues each year are now $2,850.
Lastly, we’ve been planting clover for a few years now. The doe weight averages 115-120 lb. The bucks average weight is around 185-190. These are my own anecdotal numbers, not from the biologist. But he is pleased with the progress we are making with our QDM program. The horns are much better than when we started too. Obviously not B & C animals but very nice Black Belt bucks.
