Anyone do it? Been getting the itch to try it, likely sometime in the mid/late fall or early winter. Some questions…

I don’t have a pedal kayak or trolling motor, just paddling….reckon that would be a problem more so than anywhere else?

Are there any public places to put a kayak in for free or a nominal launch fee within reasonable paddling distance of decent places to fish?

What kind of fish would one most likely be targeting in say Nov or Dec, and on what types of live baits/lures?

Chart courtesy of Pier#r (David Thornton) on www.gulfshorespierfishing.com

You can put in at just about any launch in the area. There's several places on Ft Morgan Rd you put in for free. Fort Morgan Pier / launch at the end of Ft Morgan Rd (bay fishing), The Pines Park Public Boat Launch (don't know if that's the "official" name of it but it's about 12 miles down from 59) on the bay side, Mo's Landing (about 2 miles from 59 on Little Lagoon), Jeff Friend Trail Kayak Launch (about 6 miles from 59 on Little Lagoon). You could also put in at Cotton Bayou or drag / roll your kayak to the water on any of the beaches.

Best bet for bait would be live shrimp (will catch everything on the chart along with others not on the chart), fishbites (strips and dirty boxer curly tails), fresh dead shrimp, sand fleas, etc
And, just FYI, this chart pre-dates most of the species having open/closed seasons. Make sure to check the regs for what you can keep (I know flounder are closed in November...you can catch them but can't keep them)

Get up in wolf bay and wear the trout and redfish out with live shrimp.

You won’t have a problem at all.

You can launch at the Orange Beach boat ramp at end of marina rd and that will be a pretty central location to hit some good spots.
Maybe even down further at Bear Point marina. Either will do, or if you have time, try both.

As far as tackle, just pop in to J&M’s or Sam’s and see what they are hitting on at that time. They’ll put you on the right baits.
I kayak from Cotton Bayou, to the islands, all up to what I still call Caswell, and the north side of Ono. Sometimes I go up Ole River on the South side of Ono. Just depends on wind and boat traffic for me most of the time.

The inshore fishing really picks back up in the Fall.

Ive never personally fished it, but a friend of mine down there told me the Magnolia River is awesome in the fall for trout, reds, and flounder.

I put my kayak in once in the upper part of Wolf Bay accessed from Foley and caught some reds and specs. I think I launched near the old Wolf Bay Lodge location. But; it's been a while.

I’d fish fish river like you fish for bass (jerk baits, rattle traps, etc) if I was coming in December. You’ll catch trout and redfish beating the banks and fishing drop offs.
