I have several deer plots that I have always planted rye, wheat, and oats and also mixed in some clover. I am sick of this spring mess of the tall grains. I am making a couple of them strictly clover so I don't have to plant every year but my main question is what can I plant besides the tall grains? I have heard brassicas mixes are good for Fall and Winter but never planted them. I've planted lab lab in summer but not the brassicas in Fall.

My off topic question is planting sunflower or browntop in clay for dove. How will it do? Just picked up a small plot I want to use for Dove and it is mostly clay. I did post this in wing shooters as well but thought I would throw it in here as well.

Why is it a tall mess? They have seed heads that feed deer and turkey, as well as provide cover for poults during spring and early summer. But if you don't care about any of that, then just bushhog the grains down in May. They'll just lay over in june.

Those tall grains are wonderful for birds, and even deer will strip the seed heads off. It provides cover in spring and also biomass in your top soil layer for healthy soil.

Sunflowers generally don’t do well in a heavy clay, especially if it’s hard panned from repeated equipment intervals or livestock, and deer will absolutely destroy them before they go to flower in areas of high deer density. So acreage planted and soil type will determine what to plant.

Pure stands of white clover varieties are great too, but I generally plant wheat or cereal rye in them as companion crops for winter.
