For those not hunting or monitoring a community scrape/licking branch, you're missing out. It's the one place all the deer in an area come to socialize. To find one is GREAT, especially if it's positioned for hunt-able winds. If there's not one in a specific area ya want to hunt, introduce yourself (the new deer) to the herd by building a mock scrape/licking branch. They never see you but, they know you're there because they smell you. My Idaho scrapes worked out well last season, I'm giving them a year off to see what a couple bucks do if they survive. My mocks and LB's are starting to produce pics most days in Washington, can't wait to check some SD card type cams later in June.
This little guy has a blast almost daily at this mock/lb

I played with mocks a lot in prior years but got out of the whitetail game in 2010 when I got transferred here. Over the last 2yrs Im back after it with the same passion I once had. My favorite scents are Pollocks buck and doe preorbitol and Buck fever synthetics forehead gland and pre/post rut. They're as good as advertised imo

I have one that has been opened up every year under a leaning holly tree for years. Bucks start using the liking branch and pawing the ground in late Oct. when the velvet starts to come off. I have gotten pics. of everything from a button buck to a 10 point working that liking branch and does pawing the ground and peeing. Some bucks work a scrape often, some only once. I don't think a buck can walk by a liking branch without working it.

Grandma said...Always keep a gun close at hand, you just never know when you might run across some varmint that needs killing...

I know the community scrape I found in Baldwain County in the early 90s still gets hunted today.. It's a year round attraction and my buddy still owns the land
