If anyone here knows where I can kill a canvasback, please let me know. I’d be willing to swap a deer hunt down here if you have a place we can go to shoot some Cans.

I went to Catahoula lake----Louisiana on a guided trip 2 years ago. That lake winters thousands of Canvasbacks. 3 of us got our Birds. Just a bit of advice....being divers and BIG they TOUGH to kill! We were shooting heavy steel loads and lost probably 5 birds. It is mostly pass shooting there. I would strongly suggest investing in something like Tungsten Matrix. Guide had a GOOD Retriever.....but if you wing one and it falls say 50 yards out they swim so fast the Dog could never catch up with them.

Don't see many cans down here in south Bama. Buckwheat knows what he's talking about with catahoula lake though.

Any particular reason you are wanting to shoot canvasbacks?

It’s the only waterfowl that I don’t have mounted that I really want on the wall.

I've got/read a couple of books regarding Market Hunting Waterfowl back in the day. Back then there was a Plethora of wild Celery available and the Canvasbacks craved it. Feeding on this almost exclusively made them very TASTY! Brought the highest price at the Fancy Restaurants. A brace of Canvasbacks could bring as much as $4.00 back then when common folks worked for $2.oo/day.

In our area. Seminole or the Tennessee river.

There used to be a lot of them killed on the Tennessee river. Seems like there was even a guide or two that specialized in Cans. The circus probably put them out of business.

I have killed a handful but never targeted them.

Previous info on Catahoula is solid.

I wonder how many “a brace” is?

I’d love to kill one too for the wall. The very first duck I ever shot at (and missed) was a canvasback. Sadly, that was the only shot I’ve ever had at one too. I’ve heard they have some luck with them in the Grand Bay area but I’ve never hunted that area. The parts of bama I hunt normally don’t get them.

This one came from Guntersville and took several days to get my first. Killed plenty since but very few of this caliber. Don’t know if there still some guides up there or not. We get a few on Pickwick and Wilson. I sold my boat because of the chaos on the river.

Your best bet is to go west like mentioned. LA or TX should have some hotspots

I wonder how many “a brace” is? A Brace is a pair a.k.a. 2 (Two).

We kill them up here all the time. I don’t hunt divers much anymore but I still have the stuff to do it. I could probably help you out.

Anybody need a guide to go hunt cans I can help you out. I’ve been multiple times with them and we always kill plenty of cans among pretty much every other bird in the flyway. But cans and pintails are thick there

I am from LA and have hunted Catahoula Lake and Boeuf WMA for ducks, I have never killed a canvas back and always wanted one to get it mounted, my buddy had plenty of luck every year and would always get a couple.....I am still hoping to get a couple to mount one of these days.......may have to go back home to do it........

The only one I killed was in MS on morning. 1st group of ducks buzzed the dekes 1 minute into legal time. We just saw ducks and dropped 3. Problem was Cans were not legal to kill that year so….. yeah.
