I don’t buy or sell hay. My son just got given access to 20 acres and the equipment to do it. The pasture has been cut for hay for years but the fella quit this year. For just regular old mixed hay how much could he get for 50lb square bales? Also how hard is it to get rid of a couple hundred squares? Not looking to dissect this to death, just good averages. Thanks!

Hard to line up help in today's world! He will need a place for dry storage if it don't sell in the field. Most square bales around North Alabama sell for about six dollars a bale and up for mixed grass hay. If it was close to Halloween you could sell some of the hay for fall decorations. If you can target the horse owners, your price will go up accordingly. Dont forget there will be some breakdowns in the field that may be costly. Fuel cost is up as well. He will also need a trailer and a way to move it. It is not the money making opportunity many folks think it is.

Hay is everywhere this year. Last year one could sell hay for whatever price they put on it. There are many folks on here who have never picked up a square bale of hay. Might have an Aldeer get together for those that haven't and get your hay hauled for free!

Good Luck. Keep us posted and let us know how it goes.

I appreciate the information. I threw hay in the barn as a kid but don’t know the first thing about the business of it. If he can learn all the lessons that come with this and make a little cash it will be a good year for him.

Need to know what kind of mix grass before you sale to horse people. Contact your local coops and feed/seed stores they usually like to buy local.

I haven't bought or sold square bales in several years so I have no clue of current cost. You should be able to get the worst case scenario if you know the price of a similar quality 5X6 round roll. They should weigh in the neighborhood of 1100 to 1200 lbs if it's good and dry. There would be 23 (give or take) square bales in that round roll. I know square bales normally would bring more for the same amount of hay due to handle ability for the small farmers without equipment. Price drastically changes according to if the buyer picks it up in the field vs seller hauling and stacking.

I buy clean square bales at $5 a piece delivered and stacked, granted I buy at least 100 bales at a time.

Been doing Hay for several yrs. We get 6.50$ / Bale delivered for our Bahia squares. If it gets wet we sell it as construction /mulch hay @ the same price. I try not to fool with Horse folks if possible. They are way too picky for me. alot easier to move square bales than rounds.

I’m guessing no one buys mulch hay in 4x5 rolls?

I forgot to mention, before you start cutting make sure there are no steel pipes driven "almost" in the ground, no stumps left, no concrete placements, etc when you start cutting. A fallow field will hide many things that will tear up a mower in a heartbeat.

Many times when folks offer up free hay for the cutting, they just want their place bush hogged for free. The hay has no value and you are going to tear something up. If you havent priced parts lately, maybe it is time to do so!

Best if you can put it on a trailer, then put the trailer under a barn. This is so you don't have to move it many times.
