That stuff is pretty amazing. I planted some last fall, and really like it. I think I would plant it over crimson going forward.

Compared to medium red, crimson, or ladino (white), what is the attraction factor when it comes to deer consumption, comparatively?

It matures well past the time crimson or red does, so it’s available at a different time. It can grow almost 4’ tall and puts out a lot of biomass in June and July. It’s available during peak antler growth and lactation periods. Really can’t compare it to others on an attraction scale because they’re not available at the same time. Ladino is a perennial so it’s present at the same time but it will not act as a good companion to arrowleaf because it’s a much lower growing variety. They each have their own pros and cons. Deer destroy it everywhere I’ve used it. They completely defoliate it over the next two months.

I used to plant it a lot but got away from it the last couple of years. Think I need to add it to a couple of plots next year. Especially those plots that don’t get afternoon shade in the hotter drier months where Ladino fades out.

I've been mixing arrowleaf and crimson for many years, 3 lbs crimson to 1 lb arrowleaf seems to give them an equal chance. One will do better in one field, and the next field might be the opposite. Both usually do well and provide food at different times. And the arrowleaf is great cover for poults. It's high enough to provide cover from hawks, but the ground under is clean enough that they can move under it.

I have found no downside to mixing them.

i mixed 3lb of blackhawk , frosty berseem, and fixation balansa several years ago with wheat for a property in greene co. mid may the following year i went down to see how it was playing out. the wet fields were dominated by balansa, good soils were 99% berseem, and ALL poor soil fields were dominated by arrowleaf. i’ve use them now almost field specific after seeing that. balansa will flourish in almost standing water, i didn’t figure there would be any clover would have tolerated it

I haven't had good luck with Balansa for some reason. Crimson and arrowleaf do well. I have planted it twice in a field that stays wet a good part of the year too.

I planted a little roadside opening last fall and whirled out some durana on it too. It has blown up like I never imagined especially considering the spot had never been planted before. It does stay pretty shady

Looks good. I think one of the keys to Ladino is having spots with afternoon shade on drier sites.
