Anybody ever used black cosaque oats or heard of them? How do they compare to Bob oats? What about buck forage oats? What do you guys use and recommend?
Also, to all you guys that make your own mixes for planting, how much white and crimson clovers, rape, and purple top turnips should I add to 100 lb. (or less if you prefer) of wheat/oats per acre?

you want to stick to the planting rate of each plant don't put more seed out than the soil or nutrients can support

I've been told by several in the seed game that coker 227 are close to the buck forage stuff and bob oats are next. I'll be adding which of those two I can find to WMS Deer Magnet mix. Of coarse the cokers and bobs are much cheaper than the kind with a deer pic on the bag.

Bob oats will turn yellow and sour during cold weather in Hi Jackson, or at least they do in not as Hi Marshall.

You will not be disappointed with Buck Forage Oats at $25.50 per bag.
We have planted these oats in patches right next to Bob Oats and plain ole feed oats, and the deer will walk right through the others to get to the Buck Forage Oats. Well worth the little extra money.

I planted a Ram Forage oat last year and had good success with them. The are cold tolerant and handle grazing better.

I called the place where we are getting all of our other seed and told them that I would get everything from them if they would drop the price on the BFO. They dropped them down to $28 a bag. I figured that was good enough so we're gonna use them. I'm scared of those new Black Cosaque oats....she claims they're supposed to be the NEW forage oat, but I'm scared to use them all over without any testimonials.

Well worth the little extra money. All that genetic biological manipulation and years of selective reproduction of specific seed that has X characteristics that deer gravitate to ain't worth the extra $$$!!!!!!!!!!! It's all the same anyway!!!!!! Not!!! Research and education actually makes a difference!!!

Well worth the little extra money. I quit trying to convice these folks years ago that there is a very noticeable differnece between regular Bob oats and BFO. You won't see much difference when both varieties are young, but older they get the more you will see the difference. I have done several side by sides over the years and not to mention UF did some testing on preference along with nutritional content of each variety. BFO was number 1 or 2 in every category except yeild. It is a slower growing oat, which keeps it young and tender longer which deer prefer. It also has a high protein and sugar content than most other oats and cerial grains other than the naked oat variety. Which is the only oat I have found that out performs BFO on prefernce but it is even slower growing that BFO. If you have a really high deer density, they won't keep up with the browsing. I usually mix in some wheat for that reason alone just as a filler.

I like them because they will not freeze in Alabama winters. Not to mention the deer love them.
