I hunted A side last weekend and saw a couple bucks. One was feeding and the other looked like it was cruising. Didn’t see any chasing.
Anyways the B side has gun hunt this weekend and was wondering if anyone on here knew if the rut was in full swing there?

Well I scouted things out Thursday and made it for a hunt yesterday (Friday). Didn’t head out u til after kids went to school so got there around 930. My spot was taken so I chose a nearby spot that was easy to hunt. I figured guy might leave in an hour or two then I could slip in for rest of day. I eased over this hllltop about 150 yards from rd and immediately saw movement in hollow below. It was a cruising buck. It started up other
Side of hollow. Luckily I got a shot off and he fell immediately. It was a seven that should’ve been an eight(aren’t they all?) checked buck out at ranger station. 3 1/2 year old. Ranger said rut is on and will be until end of January

Congrats on the kill! I used to know a number of guys that hunted Hollins up until about 5 years ago. Most everyone quit going since then. Are the hunter numbers in decline or is it just my group that’s moved on to other places?

I was surprised at low number of hunters I’ve seen there. I hunted the first gun hunt in November and got a doe in first hour. Didn’t hear but a few shots and encountered few vehicles then. Same with the other three times I’ve gone there. I heard Coosa has lower participation numbers also but haven’t hunted there yet but only scouted a bit. Hollins is park like in its beauty along with the national forest around it in general. The ranger said the average mature bucks harvested easily weigh 200 lbs and may score around 130s

Yeah there’s been some big ones pulled out of there in the past. I used to hunt Hollins a little and Choccolocco a lot when I lived in AL. Might consider making a trip back next year. I think DCNR posting pics of the bucks coming out of Choccolocco drove those hunter numbers up big time. Maybe they’ll keep it quiet for Hollins.

It dang sure did. The DCNR ruins about everything they touch in the long run. They want money, big buck pictures makes money. License sales makes it happen.

Glad someone else noticed the effect the DCNR had there. It got real stupid right after I moved to the Carolinas. I came back to hunt the first gun hunt at Choccolocco and every pull off had 2-3 trucks in it at 4 in the morning. Maybe everyone will just go to Bankhead and leave the othe WMAs alone now…

Good info here. I scouted Hollins side B last weekend with my bow. I'm curious if most hunters set up in a tree climber or hunt from the ground?

It’s so open that rifle hunting from ground is pretty solid approach in a lot of places. Of w a bow I’m generally choosing tree stand. So far I prefer A side but there’s much left to be explored on both sections. Travel routes between thicker areas is my go to set up since I have limited scouting time. Thank goodness for virtual scouting.
