I guess mom went wild on TV infomercials after having a few toddies and ordered some crap for Christmas gifts one day that year!
I got something called “Buck Ears.” You wore them like ear muffs but they set behind your ears and they were cupped like you would cup your hands behind your ears to hear better. Looked stupid as hell. Think of Mickey Mouse ears behind your ears.
That same year I got a pair of “Moon Socks.” They were shiny silver colored and thin like dress socks. Supposed to keep feet warmer than wool. They sucked and also looked stupid.
Both gifts went out with the wrapping paper as I recall.

The most disappointing and best Christmas gift I ever got. 1982, I was 12 years old and I don’t even remember what hot new toy I was wanting but instead I got a sleeping bag, some long johns, pair of boots and some other camping type gear and a few toys. I didn’t say anything but I was really disappointed. Then around 1 or 2 as usual dad started packing the Bronco to head to the hunting camp in TN. He finished putting his stuff in and comes in the house and looks at me and said “well, ain’t you coming?” That’s why he got me all that camping gear, it was the 1st time I got to go to the hunting camp. And for the next 30+ years we chased deer til he got to where he couldn’t do it anymore. Best Christmas presents ever. Best answer hands down.

Seems like underwear and socks is common. I’m still wearing the underwear and socks I got three or four years ago so I just take everything to goodwill or give them away.
Heck that’s what I usually ask for, socks and underwear.. I could always count on mama because those were always included along with the great gifts growing up. It’s sad to have to buy your own even after 15yrs. Merry Christmas mama.

As I was reading this I was thinking about some Christmas’s as a kid. I didn’t get much we could not afford it but I always appreciated it. We went to a small country church at the time. Think old timers and farmers salt of the earth good people. There would always be a Christmas play and Santa would come in the back door at the end. Everyone would get a small paper sack from Santa. In it would be an apple an orange and assorted nuts and some candy. Dang I must have been a simple kid because I was glad to get it. Nowadays if you give that to a kid they would probably throw it back at you I see that a lot when we get wish lists from DHR. Kids now expecting drones, I-phones, $100 R.C. cars. It used to be socks filled with nuts, apples and oranges.

Socks and underwear every year for Christmas gifts has always made me wonder if people think I'm ruff on them or something
When I need expert advice I tend to talk to myself The older I get the better I used to be

The old childhood Christmas stocking with pecans an orange and all those other nuts they would put in it. It was a yearly routine

I'm not going to let a gift disappoint me. Seems kind of childish. It's a choice, I could care less about what I get. The kids and wife always do great

Worst gift I ever got was from a sister-in-law. She gave me an ink pen with a trucking company logo on it that a salesman from the trucking company, that called on her at work, gave her. It was one of those $0.25 pens. Needless to say, we stopped exchanging gifts after that year.

I don't think it was disappointing or a bad gift, but looking back it was a strange gift.
I grew up in Arkansas and pretty much our ENTIRE family was working-class (which means - everyone worked (mostly at the sawmill), but didn't have a lot to show for it), but we all stuck together and were very close. My Aunt Betty (who was a widow) didn't have any children, but she would buy for all of the younger kids (and there were a bunch of us). She would typically buy used toys and what-nots for all of us at the auction - most of the gifts were between $1-$5, but we all appreciated them greatly. Keeping in mind that I was raised in the middle of Arkansas (outside Hot Springs) we would typically get some snow and sleet every year, but nothing like the North.
One year for Christmas - she found a pair of ice skates that were probably 3-sizes too big, she explained I could wear a couple of pairs of socks and they would fit perfectly. Of course I gave her a hug and thanked her, but I only had one chance a couple of years later to wear them and promptly fell and busted my head open.
