N2deer's browning post and 3toes response got me thinking. I saw this A-5 for sale the other day on alducks.com. It appears to be in really good condition at a pretty fair price. Figure I would post it here for the guy. I wish I had the money availible to buy it or it would be sold already.

good looking shotgun. I haven't owned one yet, but I will. I shot my granpa's in the dove field several times when I was younger and loved it.

My grandpa gave me 3 - Winchester Model 1911's when he passed away. They are not in mint condition by any means, but they will never go anywhere. They were all 3 my great grandpa's and they have been handed down to me. He never turkey hunted at all, but they shot lots of rabbits, cats, dogs, squirrels, deer, and snakes over the years that I know of. I need to get them out and hunt with them this year.

Same here. I have a few A-5's my grandfather has passed down to me along with a few I have picked up over the years. I will pass them to my son. They are not mint condition but they have killed more than a few truckloads of quail and dove in their time. I have owned a lot of different shotguns over the years, but there is nothing that feels as sweet in the hands as a Belgium made A-5.

3toe- Why does the poly-choke cause it to lose value? And what exactly is a poly choke?

This is going to sound sacreligious to all the Browning purists, (and I am somewhat of one myself: Unless I'm shooting ducks or turkeys I refuse to use anything other than my 1966 model St. Louis Sweet 16) but for a magnum gun, I'd rather have one of the newer japanese made synthetic A-5's.

I have one of the old Belgium ones with a 30" full choke, and the thing is just so heavy and awkward it's really not practical.....The synthetic ones feel like they're about 2 pounds lighter and they still have the same feel as the old humpbacks when you put them to your shoulder.

A friend of mine has a synthetic magnum A-5 he bought in about 95 or so when they first came out and I love it. I've been trying for a while now to trade him out of it. I'd like to make it into a duck gun and maybe even turkey hunt with it every now and then, but he has his eyes on my sweet 16 and that will never happen, so I have to come up with something else to trade or just buy one somewhere.

A polychoke is an adjustable choke that can be added to the end of the barrel. It can be adjusted from cylinder all the way to full by turning it. The reason the gun loses value is because it has been modified. The gun would bring more if it was all original. It's hard to find these guns these days without some kind of modification. Buttpads are the most common modification. Some add a polypchoke, drill it for a scope etc. If you want to retain any guns value, don't start screwing with it. And NEVER get the bright idea to take some steel wool to one to "knock off" a little rust. If it takes more than oil and rag, LEAVE IT ALONE.
