Snuck out Sunday morning to a friends property up the road with my older brother to try and bag my first turkey. He wanted to put me on one since I’m green and he has tagged out the past couple years. We had a couple decoys set up in an unplanted deer plot a couple hundred yards from a creek where birds have roosted in years passed. We were sitting on the ground up against a couple pine trees doing some occasional calling but didn’t get any response. Long story short… a bird pops up at 100 yards and starts strutting to us and putting on a show…. He took a look at the decoys and wanted no part of it… then started to circle behind us. Luckily there were two of us because He wouldn’t have seen the bird till he was in our lap and I wouldn’t have been able to make a move on him… big brother made the shot and it was high fives and hugs…. Sure would have been cool to hear him gobble and hit the decoys but the experience was enough to get me hooked! I guess I’m a turkey hunter now.
