My son came in for opening weekend. We get to the club to sign out and our fist area was taken so we decided to hunt a place I have not hunted in a couple of years. Going in I notice the sides of the road had grown up in young pines so we just decided to stop and unload the golf cart because I knew turning a trailer around would be tough in this mess. So we unload, drive literally 50 yards to get across a mud hole. It was about 5:55 and I wanted to wait on the birds to get started good before we head up to the top of the hill to listen. I told my son to go ahead and load his gun. He racks a shell in the chamber and a turkey gobbles just over the hill. Never heard of one gobbling at loading a gun. We got up the hill but were pinned down and had to watch him pitch out right behind a hen. I still can't figure out why he didn't spook at the truck but it was kind of nice to start the morning watching one gobble. Either him or his buddy died a couple hours later so it was not a wasted trip.

Don't give up, don't ever give up!

I had a buddy of mine walk up on a roosted bird way after fly down time in a 3 day old burn on Sunday. You could see forever in that area. He thought the bird was on the ground so he stopped immediately when he heard him gobble close. Made a couple of calls and he gobbled back close but my buddy couldn't see him. He said finally after about 15 minutes bird pitched out of the tree 30 yards away and flew away from him. How he didn't bump him is still a mystery. Only thing we could figure is that he was facing away from my buddy gobbling initially and he just got real lucky and stopped when he did.

I’ve hunted places where they were so pressured they wouldn’t hardly gobble at anything. Give the truck horn a few honks and they would gobble. I got dang near under one last year before daylight and didn’t realize I was that close until he gobbled straight up from me. I yelped very quietly and scratched in the leaves and he dumped out of the tree just about in my lap and I shot and missed. The bird took flight and flew to a cow pasture about 400 yards away. I was so mad and disgusted walking to the truck and he gobbled so I mad a dash across a swamp and snuck in on him. I yelped a couple times and scratched in the leaves and he came running down my gun barrel. I didn’t miss this time. He was definitely love sick

I kilt one a few years back where I could turn and see my truck from where I was sitting. I drove under him on the way in. But I drove in 2 hours before daylight trying to beat the crowd.
I set up on one last year that gobbled his head off until about 8am. He quit gobbling and I thought he had left the country. About 10 I started easing out and bumped him out of the tree. They do some crazy things..

Had one go nutts over an ambulance riding by the club one morning

Funny what they will gobble at. When i use to hunt wma - i use to still get them to gobble the last week of season by doing one very loud single owl hoot. That also helped me kill some the last week of season - it was all about volume

Got on one that was gobbling at some drilling equipment being loaded onto trailers a few miles up the road. Every time you heard the chains being pulled across something he would blow the woods up.

Me and a buddy were hunting on Lookout Mountain a couple years ago, and I had about blew the reeds out of an owl call and heard nothing. A few minutes later a donkey started braying in a nearby pasture and birds gobbled in several directions. We always joked after that, that we were going to start riding donkeys Turkey hunting. Lol

I had to use the Tk and Mike cow call one day on a bird that wouldn’t gobble at anything else but that. He always had hens with him so you could never call him away from them. You start moooing like a cow and he would gobble pretty good

They go nuts at the trains at crossings when they blow the horn. Been many a time they wouldn’t gobble at anything but that always got one out of them.

They will gobble at anything. Then again sometimes you can’t get them to gobble at anything. That’s turkey hunting.

Few years ago I had one spending time in a pasture and I went after him two or three different ways and every time he would be on the other side. One morning I decided to drive the golf cart all the way around to the back of the pasture and wait in some plantation pines to see what happened. I was sitting on the golf cart reading my daily devotional waaay before it was time to gobble and I heard wings swish and I looked up and saw him pitch down in the pines I was sitting in. I slid off the cart, put face mask and gloves on and made my first call with my back against the cart. I wound up low crawling about 20 yards and killing him in full strut. Crazy hunt that proves they don’t always do what they’re supposed to do.
