I will be down next week along with another un-named Bowhunter from this site. I have bass gear and a couple surf rods. Very minimal surf tackle other than weights, some Mirro lures, and pompano rigs. I usually pick up some fish bites. Anything biting in the surf between Sea-n-Suds and the Public pier besides hardheads? Thats about what I usually catch. I do have a spot up near the fort on bayside that I like to hit and lucked into some trout there. Any advice for a couple N.Bama bass heads is appreciated.

Pompano were biting great but this cold spell slowed them down. Could pick back up quickly with a little warm weather.

As said above pompano should be back active with some warm weather by then.

There are a bunch of public access points between GS and Ft Morgan to try. If I was only catching catfish at a particular spot I’d try a different one.

Yes use a small pc of shrimp & then a small pc of the fish bites, the bites will help the shrimp stay on the hook

The cold snap did affect the bite. I know a couple that wear out the pompano and they were catching some smaller ones 3 weeks ago when it got warm. I would target the whiting in the surf. They are fun to catch and are very tasty. They should be biting great especially in the morning. I always use fresh dead shrimp. Really, I would buy me a pound of eating shrimp and then peel the shrimp and pinch a dime or nickel size. I dont know why, but peeling it always worked better. While I worked the surf catching whiting, I would set out a big rod and usually this time of year I would catch a few puppy drum. Anywhere at the gulf or drive down fort morgan road and go to Mobile street or that next public access after that.

Heard of 3 "good'uns" caught in the last month off the beach. Need a big bait tho. smile

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Peel your shrimp and you will get more bites. May can find sand fleas at the local tackle shop.

Yep. Peel the shrimp. The fresher the better. Sand fleas can easily be caught by hand once you figure out what to look for. Fish in trough real close to the beach for whiting. Further out for the pomps. The jetty and seawall at the pass should have plenty of sheepshead

Surf was real ruff early last week. It calmed later in the week but we were at the softball field. I did catch a nice whiting in the surf. Those are pretty fair eating. I waded on the bay side near the Fort one morning and caught a big Flounder and a Red that would have pushed 40". I see what the fuss is about redfish now. That is some more of a fight on spincast set up for bass. Bionic Blade was bowed up and the shimano 2500 was squealing. I thought the rod might break but it and the 12lb braid held.

Sounds like it ended up being a decent trip. Congrats. Those big reds will definitely put up a fight!
