Where in West AL? I know folks that have properties down there that have success with duck ponds. They get a mixed bag of mallard, teal, gadwall and few other species. Key is don't overhunt it and be ready to go when the birds are there. Exact location and proximity to river systems and major creeks is important.

I've hunted ponds in that area.... you'll get 2-3 good hunts per year if you do it right and that's still not a guarantee.
That's why nobody else is doing it.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

I used to hunt south of Greensboro, off hwy 25....pretty much every single morning I hunted down there, the duck hunters relatively close by were always shooting pretty good for about an hour to an hour and a half after sunrise. I figured they had to be shooting at something. Mostly shooting on catfish ponds from what I was told.
