My old 1187 has been used heavily for years and is not in great shape, at least cosmetically. It has the composite stocks and non blued barrel and receiver. I have had bad issues with corrosion and throughout the years I have probably caused more damage scrubbing it clean. I am by no means looking to win a beauty contest with this shotgun but it needs to be recoated. I am going to submerge it in a vinegar mixture and start new. I have considered an air dry coating solution and wanted to see what y’all think. Not necessarily opposed to sending it off to a gun smith but would like to diy if possible. What do y’all think?

Or have it dipped and top coated with clear cerakote

You would be surprised at how easy it is to sand and re-varnish the furniture on it. That and a Cerakote job and you would bring that puppy back to life.

It’s synthetic so no wood. How much is it for cerakote since it’s not much money?

Depends on who does it.
A lot of aplicators will quote you a good price, but then charge for disassembly and reassembly which I've seen add another $100 or more to the total cost.
I get $175.00 for a single color on the metal and that includes taking it apart and putting it back together.
If you want to DIY It, look at the air cure cerakote and a harbor freight HVLP touch up gun.
The only thing with cerakote prep is you need to abrasive blast it with 100-120 grit aluminum oxide to get it to stick properly.

A good rattle can job with a matte clear over it all works well too

There are two types of gun enthusiasts ... Those who have been F#CKED by PTG and those who will be!

Rattle can it. Good enough for corrosion protection. It will wear eventually, but you can just spray it again. It's a simple tool, there is no need for fancy coatings, unless you want to win a beauty contest.

If you go with rattle can

Scuff with scuff pad, wipe with grease/wax remover, spray adhesion promoter, spray base X2, spray clear X3.
