Looks like a signpost rub. Out in open timber , very visible. Every buck in the area will rub them . I wouldn't hunt there because of it. Now you find a cluster that size back in a thick stuff that's the real deal.

Found 4 on wma like this in a cluster. The odd thing is all 4 on locust trees. One tree twice this size but not worked over as hard. You better not shoot the deer doing that to locust trees. He'll take your gun away from you and beat you to death with it.

It would give me enough breathing room to hunt for a little while without having those idiots hunting on top of you I've heard a claw hammer is a great tool for driving nails and making rubs. Did you get a large deer foot and make some scrapes too?

I've been deer hunting for at least 40 years. And at least some significant portion of that time I have hunted in agriculture lands with small wood lots and drains and fence rows where there are not a lot of trees spread out over a large area. That cuts down on where to look and watch what the deer are actually doing. I have also been running trail cameras in those type places since they were white flash.
I have seen a lot of rubs like this. I have seen a lot of deer come by them and rub them. Small bucks, sure. I have seen a lot of much smaller rubs along trails or in a small area too. I have also seen a lot of spikes and small bucks walk past and rub those as well.
I might investigate a little further if I saw this in the woods. I certainly would not blow it off OR convince myself it was done by a spike. You can look at the rub a lot of times and tell what is going on. I noticed one like this years ago and had some cuts higher on the tree. That was a sticker off a very long G2. The wider the tree you can sometimes see how big a deer. The length or height of a smaller rub sometimes tells the tale and how it looks up higher where the G2's are hitting the tree.
For a big deer you will be able to see this. Like an expert in tracking you have to visualize the details that are almost not noticed if that makes sense.

As 2 dogs said, every deer in the woods from the biggest to smallest and even does are rubbing that tree. Great place for a camera on video mode.

That's part of it 3toe. I would not blow this off if I saw it. I have one right now in the woods on my place and I know exactly what's rubbing it.

I don't hunt over rubs I'm not arguing that, however:

I’ve always seen the biggest sign post rubs on pines. I’ve never seen a buck work over locust before like the one I showed. Me too . Back in the 80s there was a sign post Pine on Miller Mt . over in PRV, the size of a basketball . It took several years but, bucks rubbed "the Pine " till they killed it.

The most impressive regular rubs I've ever seen was done by a huge buck near my house in 1988. His rub lines consisted of rubs from the size of a half dollar to size of my calf , and a bunch of them. He would attack them. Some of the small ones would be rubbed chest high on me and the tops of the trees would be broken . All I could figure is he'd get so worked up he'd rub up the tree and ride it over and then snap the top . Then the tree would stand back up when he backed off. I ve never seen anything like that before or since. I rattled him in on Dec. 27 . He was just a, one eyed, heavy, big framed 8 pt , but field dressed 187 . His neck just behind the head was 24" , 1/2 way down the neck below the white patch was 34". I've never seen a buck around here with a bigger neck , looked like a Canadian .

I've seen cow horn spikes rub on trees 6"+ in Dia you can't judge a deer on what size tree he rubs unless you have pics of him doing it hell a decent 6pt can destroy a tree...
