Honestly seems to me like it would be an ethical addition to help lower the number of wounded or lost deer. I would be more worried about the danger to the hunter...

there were several hunter deaths when those pods first were used in the 60's. One fell on his arrow and another was shot. No bueno.

Back in the 80’s a lot of folks in Mississippi used them. I remember as a kid being fascinated by the idea, not now….
I’d be terrified if my boys were using them.

People are too stupid for that to be legalized. They would also shoot animals in such an unethical manner it wouldn't be sporting

Sounds less dangerous than climbing a tree when alone in the woods. I'd give them a try on my recurve if they were legal.

The drug most widely used in Mississippi is Anectine. It takes a massive dose to kill a human, but a small dose is deadly to ungulates. The amount used in the pods isn’t enough to kill a human. It kills deer by paralyzing their diaphragm causing them to suffocate. The larger the muscle it’s injected into, the quicker the death. Because of this people that use them will typically shoot them in the hindquarters. It doesn’t taint the meat other than the actual wound. I don’t consider them ethical, but there’s a lot of misinformation spread about them. I went on two hunting trips to Tara in Mississippi back in 2000 and 2001. They allowed hunters to use them if they chose to. Hank Hearns was the head guide back then. He had years of experience with them, so that’s where my info is coming from. Every time these are brought up, somebody knows someone who knows someone that died because of them. Like with any drug, it quite well possible a human could have an allergic reaction to it, causing them to go into anaphylactic shock leading to death. But that would be rare. The ones BhamFred mentioned happened in the 60’s. No telling exactly which drug they were using back then.

they were using Anectine, just like now. I've never heard that the "pod" doesn't have a human lethal dose. We were always told it was a lethal dose.

You would think if there’s enough poison to kill a 180 pound deer there would be enough to kill a 180 pound man.

Ungulates react to it differently than humans.

Thats interesting for sure. I read up on it and said it didn't take much to shut down a deers system. Anesthesiologist use it routinely on humans.

We are fast coming to the point where "fair chase" in deer hunting no longer exists... it's all about the killing.

on humans there is no lump injection like on a deer. It is used in a IV drip and has a very short life span so only a very small amount is active at any one time.

Yeah, I honestly "thought" I had read stories back late 70's early 80's of how dangerous the tipped arrows were to humans. That's why I was shocked that they basically were not when Shaw posted. I still wouldnt use them.

Fred Bear was hunting over bait 70+ years ago. He wasn't the first one to do it, either.

Ted Nugent will mess one up over bait. I like the baiters...

You could roll out a list of anyone you want to...still doesn't change my opinion of scouting with a bag.

We use anectine everyday in the medical field. Average dose is 0.6 mg/kg up to 1mg/kg

Can be given IM but not preferred. Usually IV. and it lasts about 20 mins. Is a paralytic.
