Are you unloading it after every hunt? I don't. Mine has been loaded for months at the time. Just blow/brush the prime out of the pan at the end of the hunt and leave the main charge in place. If weather conditions are damp or rainy or high humidity, plug the flash hole with a small feather quill or a toothpick to keep the moisture out.
You gonna pull them pistols, or whistle Dixie?

I’ll go 3-4 days with the same load before I discharge it. I didn’t think it would keep any longer than that.

I’ve been trying to get a deer with my flintlock for a few years now and haven’t connected. Biggest pain is having to clean the entire gun if I don’t even see a deer since I have to shoot the load since I can never get a ball puller to work.
Anyone know of a flintlock with a removeable breechplug? I know Traditions makes one but it’s kind of a modern looking flintlock. I’m looking for one like an old school mountain rifle or something like that, but with a removeable plug.
Anyone know of one? Never heard of one with a removable breech plug. I've been known to cover the flash hole with a small piece of clear tape, just leave a long tail on it so you don't forget it's there. What kind of problems are you having with the ball puller? Are you lubing your patches?

This might be a dumb question, but when cleaning you're removing the barrel from the stock, right? I think it's easier to my period correct BP rifles than it is my Remington 700ML, but that's just me.
How big are the threads on the ball puller? Tried it both ways. And not sure on thread size. I just got what I’d consider a generic one that came with a ML kit a while back. I will say the previous round balls I used were way to tight in the muzzle. I recently switched to a new pack that’s slightly smaller in diameter and load alot easier.

I have a TC Firestorm that has a removable breech plug. I don't think they make them anymore. It was marketed as a pellet shooter but I found it was easier for me to shoot black power and it seemed to have a faster ignition with BP.

I've used a ball puller a few times. Just screwed it into the ball good and pulled her out.

I had to pull one this week. I used a polymer range rod instead of the wooden rod on the rifle. I messed up and pushed a cleaning patch and ball down instead of the correct pillow ticking patch and ball. Got stuck about 6” down and stopped. Had to get Vice grips on the rod and wack them from underneath With a hammmer to get it out. Was getting set for a follow on shot and rushed it. The powder wouldn’t just fall out. Powder only shots are a lot lowder than you would think.

The corkscrew looks like a wine corkscrew, breaks it up nicely.

Broadhead26: cleaning is a bit of a pain, but it can be done in an efficient manner. My method is as follows:
1) take the lock off the rifle. 2) use a scraper to remove/loosen the residue at the end of the barrel at the breech plug. A few turns will usually do it. 3) swab the barrel with a good black powder solvent. I mean a super soaked patch so that everything inside the barrel gets good and wet. Butches bore shine is my go-to solvent. 4) let the barrel sit for 4 or 5 mins. 5) run a bronze or nylon brush in and out of the barrel a few times (i dont always do this, depending on how much I've shot it). Also, you can use a small pipe cleaner to run in and out of the flash hole. 6) run another super soaked patch in and out a few times as before and let it sit for another 4 or 5 mins. 7) now, instead of a jag, i use a slotted end piece cleaning attachment (looks like the eye of a big needle) and pull a patch into the slot. Wet it good with the solvent, and feed it into the barrel so that the patch ends go in before the attachment. When you hit bottom, twist it around several times so that the patch cleans all the corners at the breech that a jag fed patch has a hard time getting. 8) repeat step 7 9) dry patch until patches come out clean and dry. 10) wet a patch with Barricade, and swab the barrel good and leave it damp, letting the Barricade dry inside and do what it was designed to do.
For the Lock, use butches bore shine on a tooth brush. Hit all the nooks and crannies on both sides, then wipe off and apply a light coating of Barricade. Let it dry good and put it back on the rifle.
With the soak times, it takes a bit more than 15 mins. But when I'm done, shining a flashlight down the barrel will blind you with the reflection. Looks brand new in there.
Instead of butches, on the first scrubbing, you can use hot soapy water. Ive done it both ways. Either will clean it well. I've also used Ballistol in the barrel and on the lock for cleaning.
