I’m with a Brock, why shoot a deer in the neck. Especially a good buck. Shoot through the shoulders, not behind them. Get vitals and running gear. If meat is that important, shoot two instead of one. I might would shoot a doe in the neck or head. Not gambling a good buck!

I've shot a LOT of Does in th' Neck and never lost One. A GOOD Buck I'm going for a 2" behind the Shoulder Lung Shot. Bust those Lungs and A Deer is EASY to track...Will probably run MAYBE 100 yards....Stand there and Suffocate. Been hunting with a .243 for over 40 years in High Ground. IF I was hunting in Swampland again with a LOT of Water I would pull out th' Vintage '06 and Bust A GOOD Deer in th' Shoulder.

My dad was a fan of the neck shot until he shot a rutting one in the neck and it started to run off and he put one behind the shoulder on the run.

The neck shot only missed the spinal cord and arteries by an inch or less but that’s all it takes for it to just be a flesh wound.

The vitals in the neck are about the size of a paper towel tube and it’s not easy to tell exactly where to hit them when their neck is all swollen during the rut. And most folks can’t hit the neck vitals at any distance when buck fever kicks in anyways.

And then there’s a chance of hitting the esophagus and them dying a slow painful death.

Neck shots are a last resort for me. I’ve only shot one in the neck in the last 100 or so I’ve killed. It was at 60 yards with a 270 slinging a Barnes LRX. He was very much still alive when I walked up on him 5 minutes later.

You're only as good as your worst shot-

I used to take neck shots exclusively and killed a pile of deer. At some point I lost confidence in it and stopped but never lost a deer prior. I just decided there was more chance for something to go wrong, than right with misplaced shot.
Aim right behind the shoulder now.

I had one the only thing I could see of him was from his throat patch up. He piled up but I pulled that with another big deer and he broke and ran. I found him about 50 yards away but never a drop of blood. I stick with shoulder shots if possible

If you want to do a neck shot, have a stable hand, a rest would be best, deer feeding on corn placed in a bucket sized area helps keep the deer from moving much, shoot 20-30 yards, and use ammo in 150 grain or larger would be my preference. The deer will get a few bites and lift it's head to chew or look, shoot quick. Head down is good too, quick shot! Know that the neck don't run up the middle, it is above the center. First shot I ever took with a new larger caliber gun deer the dropped with no step, no flopping. Did miss one completely and someone shot it the next day. A shoulder shot or slightly behind would be the best shot and I what I would be doing mostly these days.

No neck shots for me unless it is a doe and I have a very stable rest.

After the wholseale slaughter from south texas…i just told folks to shootem right in the middle of the shoulder..an i had a picture on my phone with a little red dot to show them where to aim…i had a few dudes that neck shot..thats what they did an id letem..within 100yds. Ive seen several shot closer to the base still be alive an need to be finished up close…but none have ever not been more that a few feet of the shot…granted i let guys with skill and experience make those shots..an most all were initially fatal. There were maybe one or two that got shot through the front of the neck that bled out..mostly a drt shot tho. We rarely allowed anybody that was not very experienced to use anything but our ranches 7mm guns all sighted in by me..all with swarovski or zeiss..professionally mounted…we didnt mess around with wounding 160-200in deer..and yet..we wounded lots..mostly men..women were very coachable an i only ever had one that wasnt a crack shot..she wounded everything she shot..i hated takin her huntin..shed gut shoot a 150in deer ever tim she showed along with 4-5 does an a couple pigs..she wanted all of them..for pictures and meat..so id suit up in briar britches an my handy dandy 357..an id go gitem🙄

I've never understood the fascination with a head or neck shot. shoulder or lungs is a much easier better shot placement

We will burn that bridge when we get there

When a neck shot works, it's instantaneous. When it doesn't, which is a disturbingly high percentage of the time, it's a disaster. Personal and club experience for 40 years. It's a stunt, at the cost your duty to the animal.
