Was 170lb. 4" bases . One beam was just over 20 and other was just under 20. Face def had the look of an older deer.

Thanks for the input!!

It was obviously just a genetically superior fawn based on that jawbone. Seriously though, at least 5. Probably older. I've looked hundreds of jawbones, but once they get past 5 or 6 it's just a guess. Maybe Matt will chime in and give his opinion.

The wearing of the inside of the first 3 teeth is the tell all

I personally look at the percentage of the tooth that's covered with dentin,ie,more than 50%, I would usually call it a 4+ year old. It's been a good basic guide for me. The reason I post jawbones on here as much as I do is to learn from people smarter than me on said topic, and I've learned a ton from these guys the past 10 years... dang,I've been here a while.

Mr. Jawbone ageing kit says he was 5.5. None match up perfectly, but this one came pretty close. See how the #4 tooth is circled ?
Once they get beyond 6 that 4th tooth starts going away, and is a dead giveaway to extra maturity.. I've seen one Buck that old in all my days. (last photo)

Lefthorn, take a look above. From right to left, the second premolar (circled) has considerable wear. Immediately after that tooth, molar number one, has considerably more brown to white ratio, which is the dentine/enamel ratio, same for molar 2, and same for molar 3. The last cusps of molar 3 has considerable cupping (starting to dish out like a bowl). That places this deer well over 5 in my opinion. It’s 6 minimum. Likely 7 or older. Most people I’ve seen tend to error on the side of underestimating age, especially in most of AL with sandy soils and later birth dates.

I put about 50% confidence in using toothwear alone as an aging technique past age 3. Not doubting mine or any other trained biologists estimates. I doubt the accuracy of the science used to determine age. It’s not accurate. If anyone tells you it is they are either not well trained and experienced or don’t use other identifying characteristics to base age estimates on. I had Dr. Steve Demariais at MSU tell me 18 years ago that any jawbone older than 2.5 could be the age you think it is, or it could be well older. I didn’t quite understand what he meant at the time, but I sure do now. That’s why I like to use photographs and history with specific deer to estimate ages. I’ve seen WAY too many age far differently than their known ages through consecutive years of photos. Genetics, diet, soils, chewing patterns, etc can all influence toothwear.

As loose and saggy as the skin looks around that deers face and eyes I’m going to say he’s 7+

He’s got that big blocky head too.

We had to pull "every" jawbone at a SC club I used to belong to. The landowner never picked them up until seasons end.
So we had all these jaws to compare. It was interesting.

The old sage of the club had a stand they called The Sanctuary. He never shot anything, and thus the name.
He's the one who shot the Old Timer I mentioned above. Everybody had the same reaction when they saw it.
This deer was ancient. His teeth were worn to a pretty extreme level. He was also VERY dark. Of course the
new joke was that the Deer back in Johnny's sanctuary were now dying of old age.

Taking a look at the teeth on a Buck is a fun aspect of our sport. I always enjoy getting a look at them.

I’ve got one a need to post up tomorrow. I’ve got trail cameras pics and + or - within a year of certainty on a minimum of his age.

I always like these posts so I can see how my guess holds up to others opinions. I was thinking 6
