But it’s improvement for me. Don’t get me wrong the turkey hunting still sucks but hopefully it’s heading the right direction now.

I’ve deer hunted this property for 10 years but 2 years ago I got turkey rights on it. In the last 10 years it was rare to see a hen with poults. I can’t control how the timber is managed and I can’t control the high water/flooding…. But…. For the last 2 years I only killed one gobbler per season and I have trapped hard from the beginning of February till after nesting season and it looks like I may be starting to see some benefits from it. Ive seen more hens with poults this year than I’ve seen in the previous 9 combined.

From Feb 2020 - July 2022
Hogs: 541
Coons: 311
Possums: 17
Coyotes: 16
Bobcats: 8

Just wondering do you feed corn? I am beginning to think feeding corn in the nesting season is a death sentence for poults.

Hogs do more damage to turkeys than a lot of folks realize. Way to go.

No. The only corn on the property is in hog traps.

thanks for your reply bayedup, I wish more turkey hunters wouldn't use corn for deer because it is hurting our turkeys..

The coons, possums, and predator traps were all concentrated around the 400 acres of the property with the most turkey activity/nesting habitat. The hogs have been spread out over 3000 acres or a little more since I’ve been trapping for the neighbors also but the large majority of the hogs came from 3 trap sites in the same 400 acres of turkey habitat.

The density of coons in a lot of areas is really eye opening! That 400 acres being a prime example. But I'm just as impressed with removing that many hogs. Thats a ton of food saved for the other critters and less chance of other wildlife being displaced. Great job!

Very nice! There was a time when all those varmints would have been worth enough money to make it worth your trouble from a financial view. Says a lot that you are willing to work that hard just to benefit the turkeys.

You must not have killed your dominant gobbler or else there wouldn't be a single poult on your place rofl
