I find it very interesting they listed the lack of production, but avoid what the causes were. I would suspect the research showed the causes of failure. Hopefully being this is preliminary information there will be more detailed information to follow. If I am not mistaken, Gobbler had more specifics on some these studies and it's showing predation as the #1 failure before and after hatch.
I suspect I had a poor poult recruitment on one of my properties. I have only confirmed two poults sightings and 0 on camera. Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised this fall when they start showing them selves. I just got this property last summer so there is a lot of work to be done.

I haven't seen a poult this year... not sure if I can remember a year where I didn't see one this late in summer. AU's research is interesting and depressing BUT it is a sample of 20 hens, another 20 may have different results. A lot will be confirmed this winter with trapping - if there are a bunch of juvenile hens (doubtful), production was successful. If they find results like this years trapping (20 hens - ALL adults!!!), then no recruitment occurred. As to what ate the eggs and few poults that hatched, I didn't ask. No reason to, its always the same culprits on eggs - coons, rat snakes, possums, maybe a fox or coyote or so. As to poults, they don't know yet but there will be some looking into that. I suspect fox, bobcat, and, especially, hawks. Maybe coons, coyote, etc.
I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine

Predation will always be #1 because most people see their lease as a place to hunt and not a place to manage

We have as small a coon and possum population as you could ask for around my house. But I never see great poults results. I believe flying cats are the problem.
Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

Auburn did a study for 4 years on Skyline and we got a shortened and later season as a result. I can’t understand doing it all over again.

Dang, I've seen more poults this year than I have in a while. I ran a bunch out of the chufas yesterday and was thinking of making a scare crow to keep them out before the chufas mature. Maybe I better just let them eat and not worry about it.
I saw a group about 3 weeks ago there were already close to grown. I have no idea why so many others are not seeing any.
